As I often do I checked Hugh's page first thing this morning. I saw his post where he takes a fellow Salem Colleague Dr. Richard Land to task for his observations on the possibility of a Guiliani general election candidacy.

Hugh believes that it is an impossibility that social conservatives would sit out a general election match-up that featured Rudy Guiliani. Dr. Land disagrees.

Hugh believes that his experiences speaking in front of audiences and conducting surveys of the audience is giving him a better barometer of the assessment on the ground than Land's perspective as an activist.

I've seen Hugh do his surveys and I know that he is most sincere in his beliefs about the data he's compiling by way of his pocket abacus. I also know that Dr. Land speaks to the movers and shakers amongst evangelicals like Dobson, Mohler, Perkins, Bauer, and Wilder - he hears from such as to what bothers them and why they can or can not activate their base to support a candidate.

I've also been to nearly every major event in the last year where bona fide conservatives have gathered. Hosted by groups like Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, American Family Association, Young Americas Foundation, The Values Voter's Summit, and in two more weeks the next installment of CPAC. I have seen the response taken in the straw polls at these events as well.

This past weekend I also key-noted the 40th Annual Conservative Party of New York State's conservative shin-dig. The conference heard from David Keene the head of the American Conservative Union. I followed Rich Lowry of National Review who did his own straw poll.

Every single one of the straw polls I have witnessed at these events favor Richard Land's view on the matter. Conservatives are not (at this time) embracing Guiliani. In the poll that Lowry did Guiliani got no more than five hands in the gathering raised in his support.

Dr. Land brings up good points. Ones that Hugh - because he relishes the GOP echo chamber - may be tuned out too. Marriage, family, abortion are as passionate issues as they have ever been to the true conservative movement. Guiliani is a disaster on all three, McCain has two strikes against him, and interestingly enough the "Mormon" candidate is the strongest. It's also interesting that the Mormon in the race is the only top tier candidate who has been married to only one woman.

To his credit in recent days Hugh has been harder on GOP rebels than ever before (Lincoln Chaffee) but Hugh also steadfastly embraced Bush's disasterous strategy of strong arming Rick Santorum into stumping for horrible GOP'er Arlen Specter. (And we see how far that went - we lost Santorum and are stuck batty Uncle Arlen!)

Also to his credit there has been no more consistent advocate going deep on the war than Hugh - and his willingness to lead the charge to hold Congress accountable to "The Pledge" demonstrates true commitment to the tough fight against terror.

Lowry said on my show that "Conservatives WANT to like Guiliani." I think that's an extremely fair assessment... and may on some level prove Hugh's point. But I think that Land's observation is also true - the more conservatives get to know him (Guiliani) - the more they will be disappointed in his past moral behavior and positions on morally conservative issues.

At the end of the day because conservatives strive to be philosophically consistent they will long more for a candidate who will fight the tough war on terror abroad, and wage war for the culture family/life at home with values that reflect their own.

It's all very interesting speculation - but on this one - I deem it nearly too tough to call!

It's been a big year...

AlGore's fictitious movie is up for an Oscar. He got to be a presenter at the grammy awards. And now he plans to host the largest concert ever held...

And just to make sure he didn't get badgered with headlines like this:

As a blizzard of snow and ice pummels the Northeast after trouncing the Midwest, and waves of Arctic cold fronts drop much of America below sub freezing weather, the $64,000 question is, Where is Al Gore?

Gore claims that global warming is an immediate problem facing the United States and the world, and places like New York and Chicago could feel like Caribbean haunts.

If there is any doubt that God has a sense of humor, it has to be dispelled by a headline in Wednesday's Drudge Report: "House hearing on 'warming of the planet' canceled after ice storm."

He followed up with this: "Save it for a sunny day: Maryville Univ. in St. Louis area canceling screening of Al Gore's 'Inconvenient Truth' because of a snowstorm."

He played it smart and booked it for July.

Gore is scheduled to announce the concerts today in Los Angeles. He's expected to be joined there by rock stars Jon Bon Jovi and Sting, rap musician Pharrell Williams and media executive Kevin Wall, who served as worldwide executive producer for Live 8, the 2005 concerts that drew attention to African debt relief.

The Gore-promoted event will be held July 7, according to published reports, with seven major concerts on seven continents.

And speaking of Pharrell Williams. Wasn't it Tipper Gore (AlGore's beloved) who used to run the campaign against explicit music lyrics? Ok forget lyrics for a second - I'm not even allowed to print the NAMES of his "songs."

According to Robert Novak:

Supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) are truly worried about Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). He is showing signs of being a genuine phenomenon who could sweep through the primaries and take the Democratic nomination. The question for Clinton strategists: Should they attack Obama?

Of course I've been telling everyone this for months.

And as to Novak's "question" as to whether they should attack Obama or not - the answer is, "they already have!"

Or is this techinically more of a look back? Doesn't matter either way, I love the fact that Fox is getting sassy-in-your-face vs. Comedy Central. I hope this effort succeeds...

I'll have more on this later - but I like the sound of this proposal.

I'm sure the opposition will claim privacy rights invasion but that could be gotten around easy enough. Then again you don't see anyone screaming about the child's "right to life" (which actually does appear in the Constitution.)

I've never heard of Harold Meyerson of the Washington Post.

He's a complete loon on the issue of security.

He did however pen an interesting piece today on the role of Hillary as front runner, coupled with her problem of being a complete squish on the war - and how that might work against her as it did against a former front runner a generation ago.

And it appears the NutRoots are willing to let her have it...

Aren't the citizens of New York city thankful that on a day when we need more snowplows on the road than cops - that the best that the denseheaded mayor can come up with is to pass out condoms? Here's two minutes that one MuscleHead captured on tape at their subway stop this morning:

About half-way through the two minutes - one elderly African American man can't quite seem to figure out what he's just been handed - and when he does, give it back to the girl in the yellow and red jacket. (Along with a piece of his mind.)

The AP reported it like this:

Volunteers were to hand them out free at Fifth Avenue and 50th Street. The city's health department program already distributes 1.5 million free condoms each month, but officials hope a new city-themed wrapper will help them track their disease-prevention efforts better.

The new design is said to revolve around a subway theme, with different colors for the various train lines.

Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden recently told The Associated Press that the distinctive wrapper will provide the opportunity to include questions about the condom on the city's annual health survey.

"We ask, 'Did you use a condom the last time you had sex?' And once this is launched, the next time we ask that question, of those people who say yes, we'll say, 'What did the wrapper look like?"' Frieden said. "And if they describe our wrapper, then we'll know that they would have used our condom."

Looky there, looky at the little guy, what a good little condom user you are... yes you are!

I mean GOD forbid we actually adopt a mentality that said, "you know - casual sex isn't good for you." GOD forbid we actually tell people, "it would be much better for your life if you excercised discretion, and waited till you were married and in a monogamous committed setting before joining loins."

What should anger every New York City tax-payer is the idea of why for the love of all that's holy is this program being funded by our taxes?

Democrats seem hellbent on pushing through a hike in the minimum wage. They're giving the GOP all of 48 hours to review the language of the bill.

They continue to do so - even though the evidence demonstrates that without significant tax breaks for small businesses - they will put people out of work.

It ALWAYS works the same way... Elect liberals, watch taxes rise, watch employment drop...

Interesting story on the AP this afternoon.

Two prominent black politicians are now saying that "Obama would doom the entire ticket. He would cause dems to lose the House and Senate. Because he can't win - because he's black."

So where did Robert Ford, State Senator who is black get these race-baited notions?

"Then everybody else on the ballot is doomed," Ford said. "Every Democratic candidate running on that ticket would lose because he's black and he's at the top of the ticket _ we'd lose the House, the Senate and the governors and everything."

"I'm a gambling man. I love Obama," Ford said. "But I'm not going to kill myself."

Ford said he was swayed by calls from former President Clinton and Hillary Clinton.

Is this an example of the Clintons telling the plantation slave who is boss? Is this the Clintons telling the dumb negro that someone CAN'T be anything they work hard to achieve in America?

Is this outright race baiting by the thuggish TEAM HILLARY?

What's the expression?

It's about freakin' time?

The measures ordered by Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki were announced on Iraqiya state television by Lieutenant General Abboud Qanbar, the Iraqi commander who is leading the U.S.-backed security offensive in Baghdad.

Qanbar said the border with Iran and Syria would be closed for 72 hours. He did not say when the closures would take effect.

The measures would extend Baghdad's night vehicle curfew of 11 p.m.-6 a.m. to 8 p.m.-6 a.m. Baghdad's international airport, which has been closed down in security operations in the past, will not be affected.

Renee and Ty
The happy couple before he deployed to Iraq.
The happier couple now. (h/t via Allah @ HOT AIR)

Their story as told at thetrukstop:
Every so often, one comes across a story so unreal and so amazing, that it leaves a memorable impact on you. This is one of those stories. His name is Tyler Ziegel. He is 24 years old. Her name is Renee Kline. She is 21 years old. They love each other in the most phenomenal and spiritual connection ever - a connection that only a few on this planet can truly relate to. & their story is a unique one.

A few days ago, I was perusing through the links at Digg.com as I usually do, and I came across a few duplicated posts. They were all linked to the same page and image, and carried the title or description that generally followed the pattern of "Wounded Marine returns from Iraq to marry his girl". Here's the link to the photo.

It was one of the most powerful and emotional images I had ever seen. Even though I was born and raised in Australia, I moved to the USA and married into a military family. My brothers-in-law all served, as did my father-in-law. Back home, my father was SAS in the 1960's. I have a deep respect for those who join the military to stand up for our freedom, no matter how the politicians coin the cause or what their true motivations are.

I mean, you have to hand it to our soldiers. They really are the pride of western civilization. It does not matter what your position or opinion on war specifics is, these people step up to the challenge, and do their job. So seeing this amazing image had an incredible impact on me - an emotional one. I couldn't help but follow up on it, and find out more about this amazing couple. So I did some digging of my own. & this is what I found out.

Tyler Tyler and Renee first met each other when they were very young. At age 18, he began working as a mechanic at Renee's father's garage. She was 15. The two became very close. It wasn't until much later that the couple officially began dating some time after he came home from boot camp - after he invited her to the Marine Corps Ball.

Tyler was in combat engineering, so it was only a matter of time before he was going to be called up into serving his nation in Iraq. When the war started in 2003, he was there, and after completing this first tour of several months, he returned home.

But his return gave him a specific determination. He had the local florist deliver Renee two roses every hour for 3 hours, followed by six more delivered straight after this. After the floral deliveries, Ty visited Renee, got down on one knee, and proposed. "I owe you one engagement ring," he had said.

Tyler was called up once again after the engagement to return to Iraq. Despite the couple looking forward to their future marriage, he stepped up to his duty and returned. Five months into his second tour, in December 2004, Ty was part of a patrol convoy in the Anbar province, when a suicide bomber struck.

He did it... This morning at 9am EST... from the Henry Ford Museum (not a wise move for Jewish votes.) Watch his 22 minute announcement here.

Substance was sound... but he seemed wicked stiff.

"Across the nation, there is debate about our future course in Iraq. Our desire to bring our troops home, safely and soon, is met with our recognition that if Iraq descends into all-out civil war, millions could die; that Iraq's Sunni region could become a base for Al Qaeda; that its Shia region could be seized by Iran; that Kurd tension could destabilize Turkey; and even that the broader Middle East could be drawn into conflict. The possible implications for America and for American interests from such developments could be devastating. It could mean a future with far more military involvement and far more loss of American life. For these reasons, I believe that so long as there is a reasonable prospect of success, our wisest course is to seek stability in Iraq, with additional troops endeavoring to secure the civilian population.

"And no matter how Iraq is resolved, we must honor and care for the veterans who risked their lives, and for the families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice. Our nation has a sacred pact with those who defend freedom. It is a pact we must never break!

The apology came quickly. Which demonstrates a little bit of his team's awareness of the importance of immediate response.
