Free and Fair Debate? For those who missed it, this past Saturday night the Baldwin/McCullough Xtreme Radio show dealt with an issue in hour one that parents who are considering sending their child to mainline educational institutions should be aware of. There is a great degree of angst about the quality and content of what the student is exposed to in that environment. Our first forty-five minutes with Jason Mattera on Saturday should help deepen your understanding as to why. The top 10 Academic abuses in the college, university, and this year I believe 1 high school made the list as well... In response to the promotion of the show ahead of time, one of my facebookers contacted me to offer this insider perspective on the dilemma of the lack of conservative influence (balance) on the univeristy campus: I am a conservative xxxxxxx professor at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; I would like to see conservatives spend less time trashing liberal academics and more time fostering good conservative scholars to come through the pipeline.
Here are a few solid ways to start bringing more conservatives to academia:
1) Host academic conferences that are affiliated with colleges. This will help right-wing scholars network -- liberals have a huge advantage over us in the networking department.
2) Fund presses or journals -- peer-reviewed -- that can publish work by conservative scholars. Since almost all editorial boards are currently controlled by leftists, right-wing professors like myself find it hard to get through tenure. (I am on my 3rd tenure-track position, partly because of political conflicts at my last position.)
3) Form partnerships between conservative student groups and conservative faculty. Up until now, I have seen countless examples of Republican student groups bashing and badmouthing the faculty as a whole, without regard to the precarious position this causes to conservative faculty, who often find themselves caught between the student backlash and the backlash of their leftist colleagues.
4) Fund sabbaticals for conservative faculty, especially younger ones.
5) Work with the military to get more of the GI Bill to cover graduate work. Even liberal military people are still centrist enough to help the conservative cause. I have applied for a military commission in the Army and am waiting to see which officer vacancies exist in my area, so I am proof that people can have dual careers as professors and reservists. But my situation is extremely rare. We need more partnership between universities and the armed forces, which will naturally draw the professoriate away from the extreme Left.
It is easy to complain about liberal bias, but now it's time for right-wing folks to come up with a plan for a conservative Reconquista. The humanities as we know them grew out of Christian, republican, and inherently conservative intellectual movements. We should stop whining and just take the academy back.
Best, (Name witheld to protect identity)
Interesting ideas for sure. And my kind of action. Cannot curse the darkness only.

Redskins done... It's one thing to have to endure what had to be the biggest collapse of America's Team in history with only three weeks to go. To have killed New York, who will be the top seed in the NFC, only then to be firmly in command of the game against Baltimore, and then merely having to win on the road in lowly Philly... (Aside from killing New York, the whole thing went south.) But then, I have to hear the Lovely Bride log on to my OWN BLOG. The Blog that bears my name at the top, and I have to have my nose rubbed into the mess that was this afternoon's disaster all over again? How could my co-blogging comrade do this to me in such a cruel and deeply injurious way? (I believe SHE happens to be a Redskins fan, and if there is one team that had a worse year in the NFC East it was in fact the team from the nation's capital.) And for those who think I can't deal with reality, you should read my facebook status and the half dozen I've posted since the 4th quarter of today's game - and the voluntary pain I allow myself to be exposed to by fellow facebookers... Actually come to think of it 2008 was a pretty stinky year in many respects... let's get to Thursday already!

Although I could try to connect the Cowboys current process of being kicked out of the playoffs to The Cowboy leaving the White House, I'm not. I'm just going to say that I'm very sorry ( REALLY KEVIN, I AM!!!) the Cowboys are being spanked Philadelphia... I weep with every touchdown Philly makes...

"Special" Reporting no more... A sad milestone is playing out on the television as I scribble these words. In 1996 he moved into the prime time news life of the American public. Coming over from his assignment at ABC as Senior White House Correspondent Brit Hume was the face of a new energetic work with one simple objective... tell both sides of the story they cover. It was brilliant, because while they trailed CNN and MSNBC for years in terms of satellite and cable systems that carried their channel, they overtook the two "elder" cable channels - even before parity in number of outlets. But within that programming philosophy sat a little hour long feature each night Monday through Friday that did a great deal more than just tell the two sides to every story, but actually educated the viewer with articulate defense from the two sides in a nightly panel. A panel's whose originator--Hume--became the most important ten minutes of television every night. It wasn't just the panel though, Hume's keen insight, experience, and consummate professional approach to posing the questions, pinning the panelists to questions they did not wish to answer at times also provided some great drama. He is 65 now. And he wants to spend time with his grandchildren, study his Bible, and if possible play a little golf. Who can blame him? He has been the most objective, most balanced, and most credible prime time television network anchor since his arrival on the nightly scene. He exits the most watched news source on the planet at the complete top of his game. We would be silly to do anything other than wish him well. But tonight at the end of his hour long broadcast, television news will suffer from the absence of the most important news voice of his generation... (No it wasn't Brokaw, Rather, or Jennings.) Brit you will be missed. You've taught us much, we owe you far more. So for all who won't have the chance to tell you personally, take this as your ultimate salute!

"Baby it's cold outside!" Recently (pictured above) President-elect Obama met with the biggest fraud to ever win an Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe, and Nobel prize and proclaimed, "The time for delay is over; the time for denial is over. We all believe what the scientist have been telling us for years.” Today the Washington Examiner asked properly, "Uh... what scientist?" (Or it is "s" plural? And they said Bush couldn't speak!) Did they ask Dr. David Gee, chairman of the 2008 International Geological Congress’ science committee? Evidently not... Gee's most recent statement on the Global Warming HOAX: “For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming?” The Examiner piece also points out that Arctic ice is expanding this year (not shrinking), and set 115 record lows in just the United States in October of 2008. But THIS is the gem of the piece:
Despite rising carbon dioxide levels, the Earth has actually been cooling – not warming – since 1998, when the warming trend peaked in conjunction with heightened sunspot activity. It appears that 2008, the National Climatic Data Center now says, will go down as the coldest year in a decade.
Please don't confuse the new President-elect with the facts that over 650 climate scientists are documenting daily... He owes a lot to the enviro-bleeding-hearts who refuse to see, recognize or admit the truth. But many of them teach on University campuses so what should we expect? I mean to heck with truth, if it threatens my chance at tenure!

Post-Election Despite the recent crop of " smokin' hot" shirtless pictures of our president-elect, officials speculate that the number of attendees at the Inauguration will be less than half of the projected 4 million. The turnout will still be spectacular...but drastically less than expected. Maybe it's all this dang cold... But back to our National Hottie...it looks like he's had some more time to work out now that the election is over, eh? Yet, do you really think Obama is that attractive? Some people may be swooning over him but (politics aside) I'm really not understanding the infatuation. I'd greatly prefer Reagan...Can you get more handsome and manly than Ronald Reagan? I submit that you cannot!

 Pinko-Cowards!
It is amazing that someone who reads THIS. Can turn around and say: Just another made up story by another CONservative that can't be verified because no names were given and more likely than not didn't feel the urge themselves to serve their country in its time of need because they are perfectly happy being the cowards they are and letting others sons, daughters, siblings,do the fighting for them while they pretend to care just as the government does in their care for those coming back with missing limbs,PTSD,etc!~Robert Arnold (arnold92430@yahoo.com)
Feel free to drop Robert a note and give him your thoughts... especially if you know of a person who has been through S.E.R.E. school and can testify to the portrayal of the program included there.
Mr. Arnold would certainly be enlightened by your perspective.

 Super Hornet
The self-sacrificial nature of our fighting men and women should be understood without explanation. Unfortunately the left in our nation sees to it that who these people truly are is muddied. That's why my syndicated column this week deals with this! Here's just a sample of truly patriotic Americans responding to the column: Thanks for your article. I was in the AF for 20 yrs from 1973 to 1993 and never had to leave the states except for a year in Korea in 1979. I try to never pass a veteran of WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Irag or Afganistan with a handshake and a heartfelt thank you. I'm a veteran and proud of it but these guys are my heroes and I want them to know that someone respects and appreciates them. I think in the end thats all most vets want is a quiet and a little respect. ~BOB, USA My family has fought in combat for this country in combat since my Italian immigrant great-grandfather fought in the Spanish-American War in 1898. We have fought in WWI (my grandfather), WWII (my father), Korea (my uncle), Vietnam (myself), The Gulf War and Somalia (my younger brother. Now the fifth generation, my nephew and my son, serves. My nephew is a helicopter crewman who has served in Afghanistan four times. My son, the first commissioned officer in our family, is a USAF pilot who has served one tour over Afghanistan and three over Iraq. He completed the SERE training and is one of the few officers to have organized and led a successful escape. I am very proud of both of them. I will fight anyone who denigrates their service. Critics have a right to oppose the war. They do not have the right to slander those brave men and women who fight it. There are people in the service who disgrace their uniforms, but the vast majority serve honestly, bravely, honorably, and well. Thank you for an excellent column. ~ Patrick, Phoenix Mr. McCullough--I usually enjoy your articles, but this one especially hit home. You see, I'm a retired Naval Aviator and among other things went through SERE training in 1972. I still have very vivid memories of that week, and you put it all very well. I also make it a point to thank military people today, and I thank you for so eloquently helping others recognize their service. ~ Allan T. Goldberg/CDR, USN (ret)
"Semper Fidelis" "Always Faithful" - Thank you Kevin, for that story. We see troops together quite a bit in the Atlanta airport - going and coming - on their way to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, or Kuwait. They always appreciate the thanks and they never hear it enough! ~Teri/Georgia
Kevin, that was very moving. Yes, the US military deserve all the thanks we can give them for what they do in their duty to our country. Very brave and giving men and women. ~ Wanda/Oregon
Great column Kevin! during my time as a govt contractor i've had the pleasure of working closely with soldiers and i make sure i stop to thank them for their service and sacrifice every chance i get! ~Barry/Georgia
Very nice. Your article once again reminds me how the left fights the decent, and rarely the indecent. However, this is nothing new. During the Cold War, the left didn't fight the Communists, they fought the anti-Communists. Today, they devote much more of their time to fighting us and our efforts in the GWOT than they spend fighting the Islamists. ~Jed/Washington DC

(soon to be made public) Three nights ago, the most amazing thing I believe I've personally heard come from the mouth of another human being was said to me and the others seated at the table I was at.
It so jarred me that I updated my facebook status referring to the deep degree the comment both humbled and convicted me all in the blip of an instant.
As I have continued to ponder its impact and weight I've decided that I will be writing about it at greater length in this week's syndicated column. You will be able to read it first here at TownHall.com around midnight Sunday morning.
I continue to be so deeply moved by the almost "as natural as breathing" type of reaction that it was mentioned as that it has caused me to lose sleep, be even more deeply appreciative of those who we will never really be able to full thank, and to recommit myself all the more to do all that is within my power to speak truth to a world that seeks to undermine all that is true, just, and good.
Stay tuned...

A lot of the people are concerned about the economy and our next Commander-in-Chief is too. What is high on Barack Obama's priority list? Bailing out the abortion clinics.Change.gov "calls for dramatic policy reversals on abortion, including $1 billion in taxpayer money for international abortion groups like Planned Parenthood. The report, titled " Advancing Reproductive Rights and Health in a New Administration," also calls for a 133-percent increase in funding for the Title X program, which funds Planned Parenthood clinics across the country." Is this really a change from the same old same old? Is Obama really offering us the discussion, debate, and "seat at the table" that he promised? I don't think tossing a billion dollars of our taxpayer dollars at abortion clinic is change we can believe in.
