Shep's Spot

The Wall Street Journal ran this tidbit yesterday:
Last year Congress raised the minimum wage, which is set to rise to $7.25 an hour next year from the current $6.55. But Mr. Obama wants to raise it again, to $9.50 per hour by 2011, and index it for inflation. Mr. Obama says further increases are necessary so that "full-time workers earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs." According to Census data, less than 1% of workers over 25 are earning the minimum. And rather than family heads or full-time workers, they tend to be young single adults, teenagers living at home or spouses providing a second income.
Moments ago Shep Smith was discussing it on FoxNews and admitted that when he runs down to get his Wendy's Value meal in New York - that it turns out to be $11. (For the same meal that would cost $3.50 in Mobile, Alabama.)

Shep points out the obvious truth.

When you force up the minimum wage two interesting things happen.

Products and Services get more expensive - thus TAXING everyone in America, and secondly many companies have to lay people off to get their employment budget in line.

Sure it sounds magnanimous for THE ONE to talk about people getting more pay. But it doesn't happen in a vacuum. And just like his ideas about "taxing business" it will not work.

Businesses - don't "PAY" for anything. People who frequent businesses, customers who order from businesses, and clients who order from businesses PAY FOR EVERYTHING. (Including an increase in wages, or 45% taxation that an Obama administration would likely level against them.)

Truly uneducated poor people, are about to rush into office a man who is about to create the single biggest season of unemployment, high tax, stagnated economic depression-like conditions we've seen in three generations. And while they've been mesmerized by his good looks, fancy words, and slogans of profound depth like "Hope and Change." The truth is he is about to unleash the single biggest assault against the poor of my lifetime...

PEOPLE - there is NOT an endless stream of "money" that Washington can GIVE you. That money comes from those who have earned it.

He wants us all at minimum wage
He wants us all at minimum wage. Lets see, increase regulation, higher minimum wage and higher government spending. That will send more industry overseas, and shutdown the small companies. So we will all have to work for the government regulating nobody, because they will go else where. What do you think we will be paid watching smoke come out of a plant that is shutdown. MINIMUIM WAGE.

Simple Fact Is
There are a growing constituency that believes they are due when they have not earned.
They are those who wish to reap the benefits of others risk and rewards.

We must commit to economic civil war now.

Companies and small businesses need to do what they can to lay off those that are Obama followers.

Send a hard strong message now.

Third World
We will become a third world country under an Obama administration. Thanks to the uneducated, do nothing for themselves voting block that he attracks.

I am quitting my job, stop paying my mortgage and car payments, so I can be an uneducated but supported by Obama supporter. He'll take care of my every need right?

NOT!

Jim, I agree
I mentioned a couple days ago that if Obama wins the election, American workers and corporations should send an immediate message to the new administration.....shut down all companies and no American goes to work. Think of what message that would send and what that would do to the economy, even if it were for just one day.

Corporations that employ people, shut your doors.

Americans that wake up to an alarm clock to go to work, stay home and sleep in.

Let the Obama supporters support us for a change.

Test
Let's run a simple test: ask all the Republicans who constantly vote against raising the minimum wage to live for one month on $7.25 an hour.

They'd last about one day. Maybe.

And while you can argue on the minimum wage, why not spend a moment to discuss the $7 Billion federal buy-out of golden parachutes pushed by the GOP and our Looser-in-Chief that gave failed Wall Street theifs tax-payer dollars.

Most of us who would vote against a minimum wage - DID in fact work for it at some time in history. And it sure wasn't $9.50.

Minimum wage wasn't designed to be something that "supported" someone's lifestyle.

It's meant to be the entry level for kids and those starting out in the work force to get their feet wet and cause them to WANT to get promoted, or work hard to create a better opportunity for themselves.

Only a MORON would make the argument that people should be "living" off of minimum wage.

Those of us that understand the INCREDIBLE opportunity this country affords EVERYONE moved beyond that point early on in our desire to make a better life for ourselves.

As should everyone...

Seriously ExPat - this was one of the dumbest things you've ever written on the comment boards here... and considering the volume of claptrap you contribute - that's a measurable accomplishment!

Arguments a MORON would make
Most conservatives just assume that only teenagers work for minimum wage, but if you actually look at the Department of Labor stats, only half of minimum wage earners are under 25... So whether or not people should live off of minimum wage, the fact is that they do.

As for Shepherd Smith's little anecdote, I think the boy needs to take economics 101... Prices are set based on what the market will bear, and apparently people will pay 11 bucks for a Wendy's burger in Manhattan. You can't just pass the buck on to the consumers for every expense in a free market, they will go elsewhere.

How you know Pat's right?
Because little Kevin goes nuts.

You spew your party's venom, but miraculously never answered the basic question: could you live on $7.25 a week?

Of course ex-pat is right. You, Kevin, and your Neo-Con buddies could never even begin to live on minimum wage. Your hysterical outburst only makes Pat's points.

Please show a source for your comment (read "lie") that minimum wage is not meant for sustaining a family. Millions of Americans do just that.

Shame on you.

Congrats, Ex-Pat. You obviously hit the nail right on the head.

you live according to your means
and if you want to change your means, then create a path to do it. Measure your responsibilities, budget your income and save for a better future.

$7.25/week? Sorry, the question was $7.25/hour.

And yes, if I had to, I could live on that, but I wouldn't have to for long, because I would work my tail off to get ahead.

Just 9 short years ago, I was supporting two kids, on my own, making just over $11.00/hour. Yes, it was hard. I ate a lot of rice, but the kids always ate well.

I worked 2 jobs for a while, and to this day I still take on extra work occasionally, even though my "regular" day job is pretty demanding.

And we spent an hour every night cuddling up to a good book, which helped us make it through the rough times.

Times are certainly hard for many people now, and we should all feel for anyone facing difficult times. But the answer is not to vote for Obama. The answer is to pull up your sleeves and do what it takes to feed your family.

Answer?
No where in your personal attacks did you answer the question: could any of these politicans, who never hesitate to give themselves a raise and the best health care in the country, live on minimum wage.

Obviously, you can't answer the question without betraying your blatant partisan bias.

So, I win!

Taxing us into the poor house
If Obama brings to the entire country what is in his home state of Illinois, it's not going to be a pretty picture. My niece and her husband pay the highest minimum wage in the country in their business there, and property taxes are through the roof. It is cutting into their profit and may sink their business. We need to wake up and realize the line of socialist, illuminati B.S. we're being fed.
