Free and Fair Debate?

For those who missed it, this past Saturday night the Baldwin/McCullough Xtreme Radio show dealt with an issue in hour one that parents who are considering sending their child to mainline educational institutions should be aware of. There is a great degree of angst about the quality and content of what the student is exposed to in that environment. Our first forty-five minutes with Jason Mattera on Saturday should help deepen your understanding as to why.

The top 10 Academic abuses in the college, university, and this year I believe 1 high school made the list as well...

In response to the promotion of the show ahead of time, one of my facebookers contacted me to offer this insider perspective on the dilemma of the lack of conservative influence (balance) on the univeristy campus:
I am a conservative xxxxxxx professor at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; I would like to see conservatives spend less time trashing liberal academics and more time fostering good conservative scholars to come through the pipeline.

Here are a few solid ways to start bringing more conservatives to academia:

1) Host academic conferences that are affiliated with colleges. This will help right-wing scholars network -- liberals have a huge advantage over us in the networking department.

2) Fund presses or journals -- peer-reviewed -- that can publish work by conservative scholars. Since almost all editorial boards are currently controlled by leftists, right-wing professors like myself find it hard to get through tenure. (I am on my 3rd tenure-track position, partly because of political conflicts at my last position.)

3) Form partnerships between conservative student groups and conservative faculty. Up until now, I have seen countless examples of Republican student groups bashing and badmouthing the faculty as a whole, without regard to the precarious position this causes to conservative faculty, who often find themselves caught between the student backlash and the backlash of their leftist colleagues.

4) Fund sabbaticals for conservative faculty, especially younger ones.

5) Work with the military to get more of the GI Bill to cover graduate work. Even liberal military people are still centrist enough to help the conservative cause. I have applied for a military commission in the Army and am waiting to see which officer vacancies exist in my area, so I am proof that people can have dual careers as professors and reservists. But my situation is extremely rare. We need more partnership between universities and the armed forces, which will naturally draw the professoriate away from the extreme Left.

It is easy to complain about liberal bias, but now it's time for right-wing folks to come up with a plan for a conservative Reconquista. The humanities as we know them grew out of Christian, republican, and inherently conservative intellectual movements. We should stop whining and just take the academy back.

Best,
(Name witheld to protect identity)
Interesting ideas for sure. And my kind of action. Cannot curse the darkness only.
