Dottie the Sock is a recently released book geared towards first graders that, in it's quest to teach about "respect", applauds lesbianism.
"She won't give up until she finds [her match]. She asks her Mom. She asks her Dad. She asks her Sister. She asks her Brother. She even asks her Nana and Papa. She doesn't find her pair, until she looks inside of herself and follows her heart."Obviously, the solution is another girl sock, right? What does little Dottie plan to do with this girl sock? Take a romp in the dryer? Get folded together and put in the same drawer? I don't know. I don't feel like spending money on the book.
But despite the clear message of the book, there is not one reference to Dottie's sexual orientation on the home page of the book's website. You have to hunt to find the author's true intent:
"The story I’m trying to tell is that Dottie is just like anyone out there," Gayle told NBC. "It doesn’t matter if she’s black or white or Muslim or lesbian."Black or white or Muslim or lesbian?
Why are we jumbling race, religion, and sexual orientation into one lump?
And why can't the author state that Dottie is a lesbian sock on her home page? Why so subtle when you message is oh so clear?
Socks are cute. I've seen a really cute movie where two socks fall in love. But I don't think socks should teach first graders about same sex attraction. Period.
