Workin' it... Rasmussen Reports, which for me is the pound for pound most accurate polling done today, has Mitt Romney back out in front of McCain by nearly the complete margin of error. But for the time being forget the actual polling numbers and consider the little tidbit towards the end of the report concerning the "markets" leanings. In a very savvy move Rasmussen allows a free market approach to the prediction process and that "markets" are indicating a 56% chance of a Romney victory as opposed to the 42% chance McCain has at present. That number for McCain is deflated from nearly 70% immediately following the win in South Carolina.
Surprisingly - in this do or die for Rudy Giuliani - he's given only a 7% chance.
The harder the questions are, the better he ends up looking. When he has enough time to go into details he ends up looking more substantive and better prepared than the other candidates.
I think it will be very difficult for McCain to stop Romney's momentum in Florida. |

How is Romney going to beat Hillary when he only seems to emulate the Clintons?
His record in MA is not all that different than the Clintons agenda if you think about it. Liberal judges, state healthcare program (now millions in the red according to the Boston Globe), a friend of Planned Parenthood, weak defender of traditional marriage, gun control, higher taxes (call 'em fees if you like they're still driving people & businesses elsewhere), and now Bain Capital appears to be looking to further it's global (read: Chinese) interests. Doesn't anyone remember China-gate? Isn't anyone concerned about this? Is it any wonder that conservative champion Duncan Hunter clearly get's it?

C'mon, think! Why are all the Country Club, Establishment Republicans , CFG, and the new media so taken by his corporate successes, that they could care less that he did very little as governor to improve education or infrastructure, or job security in his state? What makes you think he can run the country well if he couldn't run Massachusetts very well?
Come to think of it he did pander to the libs as Governor quite a bit, and now he's done the same for conservatives in his bid to be president. My question is are we conservatives and Republicans really that susceptible to a slick sales job?
Sure we want change, but do we really want a Republican who seems to emulate Clintons more than Reagan? Reagan was a man who stood unchanged, uncompromising on his principles - he had character and integrity as well as vision and optimism. As I recall, there wasn't a pandering bone in Reagan's body, or in his his staunch American conservatism.
My gut says, Romney's conservatism is born more from expedience than from conviction. It doesn't take a degree in rocket science or a pundit pedigree to figure that out. The record speaks pretty much for itself. |

After your posts, I'm convinced you live in the Delta Quadrant.
Or at least your gut does.

Romney's momentum is gaining by the day. More and more conservative icons (Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, etc.) are blasting Old Man McCain for his clear pro-amnesty, anti-tax cut, anti-Republican record.
As Rush said, McCain will destroy the party because he fundamentally disagrees with its core principles.
Romney gets it. He's brilliant, he's a proven genius at turning bad situations into successes and he's got the family values that the others lack (see McCain's shameful affair and decision to marry a filthy rich heiress).
Romney will carry Florida on Tuesday. Mark my word. |

is hoping you're right, Dan. The newest polls have Romney up by 4 or 5 points. I hope this holds or grows over the weekend.
This almost looks like the Michigan thing all over again -- McCain was up until 1 week before, then Romney pulled ahead, and by primary day, Romney had it won -- and won big. I hope that's the case in Florida.

. . . and thinking that even though the voters are worn out with 8 years of Bush and face a deteriorating economy . . . they will opt to essentially "stay the course" and elect "establishment Republican" Mitt rather than go back to the Clintons and the 1990s.
Remember, the GOP is a minority party. The Clintons are hateful, but never forget that they are really good.
Pardons for sale, anyone? |

If Romney wins FL and Rudy drops out, Romney should offer Huckabee the VP slot to unite the conservatives against McCain. Otherwise, the MSM will help McCain win the nomination.
Together Romney/Huckabee can unite the Republican base and together can beat the Clintons. |

It's all tied up at this point, with a couple of days to go. I'm hoping that the endorsement of Martinez this afternoon helps McCain, and possibly Thompson coming out with an endorsement before Tues., which could very well mean the difference. This one will be decided by a couple of points when it's all said and done. |
|
McCain is going to sell you out ahead of time. At least Romney hasn't given any indication he would. If he's planning on being a two termer he's not going to tick the base off. He has too saavy a crew of advisors. Why vote for a gaurenteed sellout? |
|
...wouldn't be bad. That would cover all the bases of the party pretty well.
McCain will destroy the country with his amnesty aspirations and his unwillingness to cut taxes.
I can't wait to see the ultimate traitor to conservatism, McAmnesty, lose in Florida. |

Dear Soul,
I respect your feelings (gut) that Romney isn't the real deal.
All I can tell you is the experience of two of my adult children who worked with him in Mass. and in Utah. According to them, he is authentic in his core values.
He was successful in tackling hard projects. You discount the Bains - business period of his success as elitist and, therefore, of no value. Every person's work has value no matter the collar color of his work uniform.
I recently had dinner with a friend whose relatives live in Belmont. They told him the story about Mitt and his sons showing up unasked after a bad storm to shovel the walks of this elderly couple. That's quiet character - not a photo op.
No body else was willing to put his name on the line to rescue the Olympics, but Mitt did it as a service to this nation as well as for all the athletes from around the world whose hopes would be dashed if the Olympics were canceled. This is also the same time period when Ann was very sick - yet she encouraged him to take on this huge, thankless task. In fact, she talked him into it because she had confidence in his ability to "fix" broken things such as the Olympics.
9/11's sting was very fresh. If you want an example of Mitt's ability to put task ahead of his personal glory, look at the Closing Ceremonies of the Games. Remember when the tattered flag from NYC was carried by the brave fireman and policeman.
Mitt can bring people together. Getting people to compromise for the good of the whole is honorable, not pandering. He can reach across the aisle and work with people he disagrees with.
You wrote about education. He has said on the campaign trail that inner cities need to serve the needs of the children better and he will make that a priority. He believes in education!
He does not have the oratory skills of Obama or Huck but he is a good speaker. He may not move your heart but your heart can trust him to serve you.

Romney is bedrock conservative only because he wants the nomination. He has a habit flip flopping and pandering (Michigan, big-government bail out, etc.) which is documented ad-nauseum so beware. As to polls, the Insider Advantage poll that Romney Droids were touting so hard a couple days ago has them back at even so go figure. McCain's steadiness and leadership qualities, I believe, will carry him in the end. Besides, Romney gets pummeled in the general, just look at any polls, anywhere from 12 to 15 points. The only reason why Romney scored in the debate last night is because no one confronted him on anything. When confronted he gets jittery and extremely un-presidential. Homie's a big time stiff. |
|
"Rasmussen Reports, which for me is the pound for pound most accurate polling done today..."
Actually, it doesn't matter whether or not you think it's the most accurate polling done today. It either is or it isn't, regardless of what you believe.
Personally, I hope the poll is correct since I think McCain is the biggest threat to Democrats winning the White House in 2008. Romney will be far easier to beat. |
|
Get real on Huck please. He's a deceitful, divisive candidate who exploited anti-Mormon sentiment in evangelicals in order to divide social conservaitives. He also lies and flip-flops a lot.
And he is terribly gaffe-prone, and basically an idiot when it comes to foreign or domestic policy.
Remember he said "taxes = hope" in the last debate! He's a liberal through and through. Why would we demand a real conservative as the nominee, and then accept a liberal in VP? We wouldn't! If Huck as the nom would destroy the GOP, wouldn't he also do great damage as VP? Yes!
Huckabee is a liberal politician with documented ethical problems. I'm tired of hearing people say he has integrity when he simply doesn't. Just look at his actions, and say NO!
Besides, he hates Romney and Mormons with a passion. Romney will NEVER choose him. And I doubt he'll have enough delegates to have any influence.

First, Romney did not pander to Michigan with his offer for 20 billion. This money would go to research to break our chains to foreign oil. It would help Michigan by bringing jobs back as alternative fuel vehicles were produced.
Second, here's what Mass. has to say about his tenure: "Many people outside Massachusetts aren’t aware that only Massachusetts has a communism based auto-insurance industry. Lobbyists supporting the auto insurance conglomerates in the 80’s corruptly convinced the liberal senate that EVERYONE pays the same rate for insurance. It is illegal to an insurance company to charge less for a good driving record. Bad drivers, illegal drivers are all subsidized by the rest of us. It is a Monopoly, and the rates are outrageous - highest in the industry. ROMNEY fought tooth-and-nail to overturn this and WON. Dispite a liberal state senate on Beacon Hill HE DID IT. He broke the strong and corrupt socialism ring up to let the free-market rule. A HUGE VICTORY. He Said NO when the lobbyists came knocking, he did it. Once ROMNEY was gone from office, the special interests and corrupt lobbyists for the insurance agencies came knocking and Deval Patrick overturned the ruling and WE HAVE COMMUNISM AGAIN!!!!!!! SO DON’T TELL ME ROMNEY DOESN’T FIGHT AND WIN. DON’T TELL ME HIS SUCCESS IS THEORETICAL. THIS GUY IS A DOER, A FIGHTER, AND IS PASSIONATE ABOUT AMERICA AND MAKING AMERICA GREAT. MAKING IT SUCCEED." "I am from Massachusetts - Mitt Romney was Hands-down, the best governor we have had in 20 years. He closed a 3 BILLION dollar defect (turned it into a 150 million dollar surplus), cracked down on corruption jailing Mob Boss family members in high position who government before him were too scared to touch. He fought almost weekly against the Gay Marriage activists, He cut taxes, streamlined inefficient government agencies, I also had a chance to hear him address a small group of MBA students at Harvard in person, and all I can say is he is larger than life. He is a Leader’s Leader. I have heard leaders speak from all over the world, but I can count on one hand the leaders who move and shake the ground and truly know how to bring about change like Mitt Romney. This country would be foolish to not elect him to the presidency." Bryan
