A North Carolina program called College Bound Sisters pays girls $1 a day to not get pregnant. The money goes into a college fund for the girls who must "attend 90-minute meetings every week at which they receive lessons in abstinence and the use of contraceptives."

The program has a high success rate and "
recent graduates have left the program with up to $3,000 saved up for college."

If "
costs associated with teen pregnancies exceed $9 billion annually," perhaps $365 a year going to a college fund in order to encourage a girl to remain abstinent a good idea?

If it works...
This might be one of those "ends justifies the means" situations.

I'm in favor of just about ANYTHING to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Like even not having sex?

Qualifies
Yes, Kevin, that qualifies as "anything."

And birth control works like a charm, too!

What About Me?
I haven't vandalized anything today. Do I get any money for that? Why not?

interesting
Is this taxpayer funded? I would be shocked if KMC supports taxpayer funded contraceptive use education though maybe his views on this are more nuanced than I previously thought.

Personally, I'm not sure where I stand on incentive programs like this or other similar ones (like paying kids to get good grades, etc.). I can certainly see the real-world benefits, however, so maybe the results do justify the means. One question, why not also give incentives to guys to not get girls pregnant too?

It will be interesting to see if this program grows into a larger, far reaching program.

And no - I don't support...
tax-payer funded incentives to have good behavior.

If a private sector program wishes to fund it... fine.

But NOT government.

Same with getting good grades.

It's your JOB stupid!

Um, yes, I did read the post and the one linked article. My commenting on the actual content of the post might have given you a clue that I read it. I did happen to miss the name at the top because when I click on the name "Kevin McCullough" from the TH site, I assume I'm heading to Kevin McCullough's blog. I will be more careful in the future. Please forgive me.

The Comma says it all...
"Same with getting good grades. It's your JOB stupid!"

A 5th-grader knows that a comma belongs after "job," before "stupid."

Good grades must have been a low priority at the McCullough home.

"Like not having sex"?
Right, Kevin.

And how has that idea worked for the past billion or so years?
