"The Catch" (2008 Style)

There is no question that Peyton's little brother stepped out of his shadow, and tonight became "Eli"! Certainly Archie Manning tonight can breathe a great sigh of pride and joy that his two sons, who he loves so much and passed on to them a love for the game that has inspired their lives, have won back to back Super Bowls AND MVP rings...

But tonight I defy you to show me a gutsier player than my friend number 85 David Tyree. After breaking his collar bone in the final game of pre-season, he missed many games in the first half of the season. And even after his return, while his contributions increased, they came slowly.

But in every playoff game Tyree contributed in big ways, and in tonight's biggest game of all - BIG PLAYS.

Tyree had no touchdowns on the year, but gave the Giants their first go ahead lead with a do or die catch from Manning.

But NONE of the plays were any MORE important to the total outcome of the game than Tyree's gritty grab in the final 2:35. Here's the video of it. What amazing sense of determination.

In what started out as the most questionable of season's, the most discouraging of circumstances, and the less than glorious honor of going 0 & 2 out of the gate, Tyree, like most of the Giants fought back with a tenacity that lead to the highest level of accomplishment.

But there is so much more to him than meets the eye. He is a committed father, a husband who is crazy about his lovely Leilah, and the founder of a ministry called "Next in Line" that more or less seeks to fulfill the purpose of helping kids make the best choices for their lives in spiritual, ethical, and moral terms.

David has lent his time for the past two years to Good Council Homes of Metro NYC. This ministry seeks to assist unwed mothers, in giving them protection, getting them educated, initiating them on how to live on a budget. It is an intensive program and the Tyrees have volunteered their time because they know the value of having someone of values there to be able to gain wise counsel from.

His determined play tonight, along with the way in which he orders and lives his life was a stark contrast to the likes of the quarterback for New England. (A boy who knocks up one actress, only to dump her mid-pregnancy for the Victoria Secrets Supermodel flavor of the month.)

I am proud to say - that David Tyree is man fully deserving of the Super Bowl MVP, and quite frankly without his miraculous catch late in the fourth quarter the Giants would have been the team who did not stop the undefeated seasoning from happening.

A bad night for Tom Brady is a wonderful thing for the rest of the universe. But to see Tyree work so hard to make his comeback complete - the night was made even sweeter!

CONGRATS #85 - you earned it!

FIRST DEFEAT PATS, THEN DEFEAT ROMNEY
I THOUGHT THE GIANTS WERE JINXED WHEN MY FRIEND CALLED (too early) AND SAID THEY ALREADY WON (and then the Pats scored and took the lead). But ELI rose to the occasion...

GO BIG BLUE

ONE OF THE BEST SUPERBOWLS EVER

NOW MCCAIN HAS TO BEAT ROMNEY THE SAME WAY.

It is a sign from God.

Romney loses a vote at NRO
Boasting in Boston [Michael Graham]

I am so confident of both a Patriots win today and a Romney win in Massachusetts on Tuesday that I made this pledge on the air Friday: "If the NY Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, I will vote cast my Super Duper Tuesday primary vote for (shudder) John McCain."

So when I say "Go, Pats!" I really, REALLY mean it.

I also think they are even more of a lead-pipe cinch to win the Super Bowl than McCain is to win the GOP nomination. Either way, I'm putting my money..er vote where my mouth is.

Totally agree.
The Giants performed magnificently in SUper Bowl 42. The best team won.

But it was definitely Tyree's magical catch, late in the fourth, that sealed the deal for the Lombardi trophy. How the heck did he nab that pass??

AWESOME catch!

A few things
1) I had no horse in the race, except that I (being a DC area sports fan) find it psychologically impossible to root for any team in New York (The "Subway Series" in baseball is a nightmare scenario for me.) I was also one of those people rooting on New England just to see someone (anyone) go 19-0, solely for the historical value.

2) Having said that, it was a fantastic game with a classic finish that befits the Super Bowl. It will probably go down as one of the best Super Bowls in history.

3) Eli Manning deserved the MVP award, and I agree in principle with Mr. McCullough on David Tyree (and it was an fantastic catch. I was amazed when he came down with that ball.) But my vote for MVP would have gone either to Justin Tuck or Osi Umeniyora (sp?) to represent the Giants' defensive line which played a fantastic game, and without which, they wouldn't even be in the game, never mind winning it. That line harrassed three of the best quarterbacks in the game nowadays: Tony Romo (I admit he's good despite the ill will I feel toward the cowboys), Brett Favre (one of the 3 or 4 greatest ever), and Brady.

Character
One thing I really agree with you about...Tom Brady. I was vehemently pulling for the Giants after hearing of his promiscuous ways. Character is something I pay plenty of attention to and it was great of you to go ahead and inform the populace of Tyree's charity.

I think the key and lynchpin to the Giant win was the Giant defensive line. I can't quibble with the Manning MVP though. Full credit to him. And this from a Jet fan.
