"McCain is far and away the most qualified man to be the Commander in Chief"

So it's really true. Rudy has at this hour withdrawn from the race. The quote listed above just aired on Fox during the Brit broadcast. Sighhhhhh...

So here's the long and short of it.

GOP voters think McCain is the most electable. It sure seems hard to argue that given that Huckabee was undercut by Thompson in South Carolina, and despite all the money spent by Romney he finds himself trailing, with massive states to try to pick up. (And as a general rule of thumb - the states where Romney spends the most - he finishes number 2 - Iowa, Florida.)

McCain has the momentum and according to the most recent Rasmussen polls BEATS Hillary by 8, and Obama by 6.

Leading in the national polls, leading in the general election match-ups, and leading in the winner take all states for next Tuesday begins to add up to one big reality: Pretty much no matter how much money Romney spends, he is due for a series of perhaps close but nevertheless SECOND place finishes next Tuesday.

Bryan and Michelle are running a series of polls on how conservatives will vote - and their margin is even larger than Rasmussen's.

Open Letter to Rush Limbaugh
Dear Rush:

For the first time ever I think I’m going to go into the ballot box this November to vote for a third-party candidate for President. I try to convince myself otherwise but I can’t do it. We need an alternative that can ensure that McCain is not elected, and can embarrass the queasy moderates who begat this nomination.

You could and would embarrass McCain by beating him in the popular vote. You would also take substantial fundraising away from McCain and severely limit his ability to get out his message. It would only further enhance your legend status when you returned to the air in November.

What do you have to lose? You’ve got everything in place already and you would only sacrifice three months of air time at the most. In the best case scenario conservatives would flock to you and the supporters of your independent candidacy would use your popular vote victory over McCain as a springboard for redefining and reuniting the Reagan coalition going into 2010 and 2012.

It would be a blast for you. The media would be forced to include you in the debates and you could toy with the MSN moderators, McCain, and Clinton with a recklessness that they would never dare.

Finally and most importantly, a rumble between you and McCain would animate the GOP base and help blunt the damage that a McCain candidacy will surely cause to the Republicans in the Congressional Elections.

Think about it. You could announce two or three weeks before the Republican Convention and take all of the spotlight away from McCain.

The Country is counting on you. You are the only Republican who could make this work to the advantage of the party and the party...And it would be a lot of fun.

Welcome to Reality
Kevin,

Good post. Now if you could only talk some sense into Hugh, we might actually start the process of bringing this party together for November. Look, there is plenty of McCain-bashing going around from the talking heads--what we need is party minds/mouths such as yours to start preaching reconciliation and cooperation, not vitriol and hatred. WE have a greater enemy and goal to focus on, and it's time for Republicans to come together and support McCain. I hope you will help with your words and columns.

He is still deluding himself that Mitt Romney will win the nomination and the White House.

McCain
My first vote was absentee from my infantry field unit in Nam. I voted straight GOP but left Nixon off my ballot. I held my nose and voted Ford when that generation of McCain-types stopped Reagan from getting the nomination he deserved and our country desperately needed. Never again. Not even the horrible thought of Hillary is sufficient to make me support McCain, and I don't for a moment believe these early polls either. Democrats and self-described independents want to choose for Republicans a nominee that can never win the general election. McCain is perfect. Pro-amnesty, big government Washington insider with out of control ego and a loose cannon temper that is guaranteed to expose his penchant for meglomania and paranoid rhetoric. McCain and Hillary are two sides of the same coin, incompetent hypocrites and borderline criminals (i.e. Keating 5 and cattlegate for starters) who will say and do anything that serves their ambition. Obama is probably this generation's Carter, and that is a heavy price to pay, but better to have an undiluted, openly socialist president than either McCain or Hillary.

Count me as a "warmonger" (I prefer to call it defender of America) who does NOT support McCain...

You'll come around to McCain. It looks like Huckabee wants to be McCain's VP. McCain will get Podhoretz as a foreign policy advisor and Hagee as well. If this were a movie it could be called "Apocranuts Now".

We're sold out to China and the NWO,

The USA is being used and abused by the NWO. Our kids are sent to possible slaughter overseas, then return as skilled warriors, to no great jobs waiting for them. I see this as a real problem, No candidate even mentions a solution.

McCain
Although I am a Huckabee supporter because he is a born again Christian and I belive a proven leader as evidenced by his 10 years as governor of Arkansas, if I had to pick a second candidate it would be John McCain. It really surprises me to that I feel that way because there are things about McCain I truly do not like. However, what is most important to me is that the President fight terrorism: terrorism again unborn children (abortion) and John McCain has a solid pro-life voting record as well as Islamic terrorism which I am positive he will do.

Huckabee and Romney
The bitter backlash against McCain from the base has got to have Huckabee rethinking his current course of angling for VP to McCain.

If Romney and Huckabee stay in through the whole race Huckabee will be crown McCain at convention. Also Huckabee and Romney can wrest the nomination together from McCain by combining their delegates.

But if Romney pulls out after supertuesday McCain will not need Huckabee to be crowned at the convention. McCain will go ahead and get his 1119 delegates without Huckabee and put Crist or Guiliani or Arnold on as VP. McCain doesn't believe he needs the hardcore evangelical vote and economic conservatives to win the vote.

Huckabee has to wonder if he has been betting on the wrong horse given the conservative angst McCain is drawing. Huckabee won't pull the base out for McCain and that means certain defeat in the general--especially against Obam--McCain won't win with moderates in that contest. It is really Romney and Huckabee in a game of chicken after Super Tuesday. Does Huckabee give support to Romney which is more likely to win or to McCain like he has been? If Obama is nominated McCain will look ready for burial not election. Huckabee has to be concerned about his chances with McCain now.

Huckabee requres Romney and Romney requires Huckabee. Romney and Huckabee endure together or perish alone.
