 WGA writers helping Huckabee's cause!
The general feeling in MuscleHead HQ this morning is that the slight up tick that Huckabee is showing in the polls this morning (nearly 2% at RCP) could possibly due to his performance last night on Jay Leno. Even critics of Huckabee's "he's not quite as conservative as us" politics indicated that his appearance last night, though short on policy jargon generated some quite cool images of candidate.
Several observed that Kevin Eubanks, and the rest of the African American band members on Leno's stage were "in the pocket" as they jammed with the Governor.
As you know this blog has written equally praiseworthy and critical posts concerning three of the major players in Iowa - Mitt, Fred, and Huck. I will not be making an endorsement in the GOP race for 2008.
What did strike me as interesting however is the delicate balance between Romney and Huck. So similar in policy positions. Both well qualified - and proven executive branch managers. Pointy brains like the fact that Mitt has pulled the Bain school of strategy formula into Presidential campaigns. But many more WalMart shoppers across the nation have an unexplainable connection to the common sense humanity that Huck is offering.
If the general election were to come down to black church goers in Ohio - as it did in 2004 - and the Dems candidate is Clinton, Obama or Clinton/Obama - wouldn't be nice to have on the ticket the candidate who could connect to the 6 out of every 100 black church goers or even perhaps increase it to 12 or 15?

Huckabee is a prime example of believing "your attitude is more important than the fact." By the sheer force of remaining essentially positive, (but not legalistically, 100% so), he has risen in the eyes of Iowans and now the nation. By doing the "almost ad" stunt he showed the mugger Mitt the gun and said back off. It is working. He is coming across as the affable one who reasons well. He is not Gomer as anti-Southerners like to imply, but rather Huck is more like the TV character, Columbo, colorful, unusual, and pretending to bumble along at the peril of those who underestimate his genius. Incidentally, as for TV characters, Mitt may be Eddie Munster all grown up. |

Do you seriously not recognize that Huck will get slaughtered in the general? His record, his policies, his corruption. Especially in the sights of the Clinton machine - he'll be eaten alive, and the GOP with him.
And exactly how are Huck and Mitt similar? Mitt actaully has plans. He has policies. He has a strategy to curb illegal immigration. He has an economic agenda. He has security experience (yes, I believe even more than McCain, because McCain's done a fat lot of nothin' in regards to national security besides supporting the surge).
What does Huck have? Well, Chuck Norris to secure the border (??!!! - he thinks it's a joke). Economics? Nothing except raise taxes and spending when we're already on the verge of a recession. Foreign policy? He's demonstrated that he's a bonafide IDIOT on that point. Security? Well, he'd like to invite the radical jihadists over for milk and cookies to sing "Kumbayaa."
This guy? Huck? Please, Kevin - you're smarter than this. No one denies his appeal. But the cool, funny uncle that everyone loves to come to the backyard barbeque is not exactly the right guy to run the country, dontcha think? Especially when:
He's soft on crime. He'll raise our taxes. He's one of the top ten most corrupt politicians of the year. He has no endorsements from any conservative authorities because, He has no conservative credentials, beyond being "Pro-life" (even though he gets paid to speak to stem-cell research companies, and smiles all the way to the bank).
I could go on and on, and many have (including Rush, Hannity, and others).
WAKE UP, IOWA - AMERICA IS WATCHING TO SEE IF YOU'LL ACTUALLY VOTE FOR AN IDIOT JUST BECAUSE HE'S "SO GOSH-DARN NICE!" |

Mitt raised taxes more in 4 years as Governor than Huck did in 10.5 years. (Both of them raised taxes only minimally so both are acceptable, even praiseworthy.)
Its fine to point out weaknesses but facts are facts and Mitt was worse on taxes than Huck was... look it up! |

keep the negative campaigning going, Romney certainly has the money to paper the country with negative campaigning. How wrong can someone be? Huckabee supports the "Fair Tax", a much better system than the income tax. Is that a lie when people say Huckabee is a tax raiser? A lie needs intent, maybe the people saying this are just ignorant. Huckabee knows what it is like to have to earn a living. Romney has never wanted for any material think in his life. Without a doubt, Romney has proven himself a capable leader and has shown his willingness to change his political positions to whatever is necessary to gain votes. |

Rush's first caller called in to defend Huckabee and Rush quickly put the logical part of his brain in a drawer.
(Paraphrased) Caller: You say that Huckabee is not conservative because he raised taxes. Ronald Reagan was facing similar circumstances to what Huckabee faced in Arkansas and he raised taxes. Rush: Don't call here and tell me that Huckabee is the second coming of Reagan, he hasn't had....
Rush took one simple comparison and went on a rant indicating that Huckabee supporters are touting him as the second coming of Reagan. Rush totally missed the point - and he is still going on about it.
Rush is the only one that is suggesting that anyone is calling Huckabee Reaganesque.
Poor poor rush... apparently his rage at Huckabee for not being 100% conservative has blinded him from making any kind of rational analysis. |

Really, what Huckabee offers sounds more like the Edwards brand of populism to me, not common sense humanity.
