The guy inside...

Nearly every day when I shut down and turn off the voices of the harping shrews that demand agreement with them or else I am the devil - I am reminded of why I like so many things about so many of the GOP candidates. (Yes I do have my differences with them too!)

I was a fan early on from a distance with Governor Mitt Romney when as Governor he in nearly miraculous fashion got health care coverage for everyone in his state - and did not rely upon raising taxes to get it done.

His op-ed basically instructing other states on how to keep their state from redefining the institution of marriage in the Wall Street Journal was and still is a primer on the topic.

Reading Hugh Hewitt's book, A Mormon in the White House, (something most Romney critics haven't done) brought to me to see a side of this executive that few could see in news stories. He IS a problem solving wizkid.

But none of those little peeks into his life really compared to the man I feel like we've had the chance to come to know in recent months. His love for HIS family permeates his desire to help other families. His willingness to say publicly, "I had gotten it wrong on abortion," takes an understanding of one's self that few are ever able to admit. His brainiac strategy to win the nomination has been the best laid strategy of any of the candidates.

The times I have spoken with him in person and by phone for my show - gave me the raw in-your-gut feeling that this man is as genuine as he is smart. That his conversion on abortion is REAL and that there was never any conversion necessary on marriage - because the Camenker/Rios/Jackson train has been built on manipulations of truth - not evidence of it.

He is now in the fight for his life in Iowa, he is pacing very strongly in New Hampshire and in the midst of very emotional outbursts by his most ardent supporters, a speech on the practice of faith, and the feeling wrongly or rightly that his main rival was attempting to smear him through a question - Mitt gives this interview with Politico. It's endearing, it's a real man dealing humbly with his circumstances, and saying honestly - what will be will be.

It reminds me greatly of all the things I have come to appreciate about Mitt Romney and should he be the fortunate candidate to win the nomination - it gives us a peek into how the down moments on his watch might be handled.

These men are seeking the highest office in the land. Their testing to be fit for office SHOULD be excruciating... And it is refreshing to see the class of an individual who is up for the long haul and willing to not lose perspective in the midst of some of those tests...

Here! Here!
Mitt Romney will make an excellent president!
Sarah writes: Saturday, December, 15, 2007 7:36 PM
Kevin - I am crying right now
because.....Mitt's stock is rising in wall street because his rich republican business cronies are buying it in volumes. However, Mitt's market share in main street is decreasing because voters find him unpredictable. Mitt is a risky investment that needs to be sold now. While campaigns are funded in wall street, mainstreet voters decide who will get to be president. Mitt Romney, the worst investment money can buy! and conservatives ought to let Romney know that their values are not for sale in main street.

I'm Sick of Sarah
I'm not a big blogger, but I have frequented them enough to recognize Sarah's never-ending (and usually confused) attacks on Gov. Romney. How exactly is Romney's, um "market share in main street" decreasing? Oh, because evangelicals in IA vote religion (and in this case bigoted religion) above all else. Gov. Romney is doing great in NH, he's up in FL.

The worst investment money can buy? Really? The best businessman in North America, ardent family man , intellectually outstanding (have you tried to get into Harvard Law and business school lately, much less finish in the top of both?) who provides detailed policy proposals (his powerpoints are impressive). etc. etc.

Give it up Sarah, go somewhere else (like outside), but please stop posting poetry while trying to pass it off for punditry.

I will be voting for Gov. Romney here in CA.

Mitt is the best candidate - BY FAR
Mitt is a quality person from top to bottom, not phony in any respect. And as the article points out he is a problem solving genious. The USA needs a man like this. All the people who are worried about our image overseas (which I could care less about) take heart. If the we are smart enough to elect Mitt it will be a real credit to the people of the good old USA!!!

Why is it?
That people have this mentality that if you take money away from rich people the money will magically wind up in their pockets? Liberals have been taxing people for decades and there's never been any sign that money trickles down. Dems get thier hands on more money they do 2 things, they hire more government workers and they funnel the money to their own special interests.Take the carbon tax they want to impose. That money would go to a bunch of college grads who took courses that there's no demand for in the private sector. No problem the dems would create "green jobs". There's no productivity in these jobs, just government susidized busy work. We've already covered wind farms and solar panels. Liberals think if you incraes gas milage standards the science magically appears for that to happen. If the private sector could produce better gas mileage they would have a long time ago. Since the last CAFE standards were imposed all the auto industry did was make the vehicles with more plastic to improve gas mileage. This has led to more deaths in traffic accidents. Of course the whole global warming scam is an excuse to raise taxes. The libs have milked "kids" for all they can get in taxes. There is no problem that the libs think can't be solved by raising taxes and spending more money on it. It's stepping on the gas while driving in the wrong direction. Romney is the only person that wants to reform programs and use business models to improve results.

peace a chance. I thought mormons were all about being kind and respectful. You have a choice not to read my blogs - or is freedom of expression reserved only for those who knock on doors? I love you and hope you find it in your heart to forgive my ACCURATE ASSESSMENT OF ROMNEY.

Kevin, mitt the flipper did not "get health care coverage for everyone".

He used the power of the state of taxachusetts to FORCE people to buy health insurance policies whether they wanted them or could afford to buy them. And oh yes he did tax those who werent able to buy it!

If those lousy high deductible health policies, with all kinds of exceptions for "pre-existing conditions" and high monthly premiums (minimum of 175 dollars per month) were all that attractive on the FREE MARKET, mitt the flipper would not have had to *force* people to buy them.
Mitt's plan is essentially identical to hillary care

Government imposed mandates are not a conservative priciple-its a government imposed solution on thosewho can least afford it.

No thanks, you can have the gay marriage abortion flipper: drink the Koolaid
all by yourself

Ignorer the Naysayers
Kevin--great article. And I couldn't agree more. Mitt will be one of the best presidents we've ever had.

It's one thing to have the right words, it's another to have proven yourself time and time again. The story of the Salt Lake City Olympics is an amazing turnaround. Anyone who can do that -- given all that was against him -- ought to be given a chance at the government.

Cornponeharry and Sarah will never like Mitt. They have an inherent prejudice than cannot be satisfied by reason or rational thought. Sad!

Kevins logic flawed
Sorry folks, I cannot and will not vote for Mitt.

He is just one of the pack of RINO's and I have made a promise to myself to never, ever, vote for a RINO again!

I consider myself a Christian Conservative and for years have waited for another Conservative to come along that was at least comparable to Ronald Reagan. Was he perfect? No, but he was a far sight better than anyone since. Since Reagan has left office, the Republican party has been inundated with RINO's. These are the ones that promise to advance Conservative priciples while campaigning, then act more like liberals after they get in office. Before the RINO's completely gut the GOP I am going to take a stand. Many pundits state that no matter who wins the GOP nomination that we should all get behind that candidate with our vote. I strongly disagree! If Conservatives don't draw a line in the sand now, the GOP wil die a slow death by a thousand cuts. Everyone uses the logic of "if the Dems win we are in big trouble". I don't buy the whole premise and here's why.... If the Dems win we slide towards Socialism at a fast rate. If a RINO wins we slide to a Socialism at a slower rate. Gee, what a chioce!

Romney and the CIA
If ever there was a government agency that needed to be reorganized it is the intelligence organizations that feed miss information to the press and the President.

Nothing could make this country safer than to put someone competent like Romney over the intelligence community and demand accountability and effectiveness.

The CIA has no credibility. In 2005 they were flashing the panic button. Less than 2 years later they claim all is well, just in time for Christmas.

If you are the President or anyone else, how can you run foreign policy when the CIA is a weather vane.

As a former Mormon and life-long Salt Laker, I beg you not to feed the Saints' persecution complex. They can out-Sharpton Sharpton with their cries of bigotry and oppression. Never mind that they were driven west for their behaviors, such as polygamy and the commandeering of city printing presses, more so than for their outré doctrines.

Kevin disappoints me; one would assume the leader of the MeatHeads to be possessed of greater discernment. His fawning adulation of Gov. Willard amounts to having looked into the man's eyes and perceived the goodness of his soul. Where have we heard that before? Mormon doctrine vis-a-vis abortion on demand is clear; yet Romney has switched from here to there to here again on the issue depending on the political office sought.

Romney's business acumen is self-evident. Government, however, is not a for-profit; it produces nothing, but sustains itself parasitically. Liberty is better served through the reduction of the gross size of the political class and the confinement of its operations to tasks specifically enumerated in the U.S. Constitution. But if Mitt’s solutions to social problems will boil down to heavy handed paternalism (mandatory health insurance, anyone?) we may as well vote Hillary and get the bloodletting over with all at once.

I conclude by inviting any and all to a tea party at ronpaul2008.com. In Dr. Paul we have a CONSISTENT conservative with studied PRINCIPLES who espouses real money (gold and silver, the foundation of lasting political liberty); non-interventionist foreign policy, which would undo the isolating effects of World Cop-ing while freeing the cash necessary to fund financial obligations to retiring boomers; states’ rights; secure borders and ports; and local, as opposed to federal, control of education. A stake through the heart of the IRS would be nice, too.
Sarah writes: Sunday, December, 16, 2007 3:49 PM
Christian - I will not vote
for Romney. My moral values are not for sale, even if it means a democrat will accupy the whitehouse. I can also assure you the conservatives (democrats and republicans) will stay home. That is the word on the street, never mind what wall street tells you.
Sarah writes: Sunday, December, 16, 2007 4:06 PM
Tryor, three words for you
Romney, Reid, and Palosi. That is why conservatives will stay home. Call our response to Romney prejudice if you like, I prefer to call it conservative values not for sale! Hey I am glad Romney has managed to buy that much endorsement in wall street. Do you think, if Romney's record was all he had, and he was not buying endorsements any credible source would try to package him as the "conservative candidate?"......a persons experience in office means nothing if he can not be held accountable for the decisions he made while in office (that is true of Hillary as it is true of Romney). He uses his experience as governor of MA to sell himself as capable, then asks voters to ignore part of that record because it does not fit with the shared values of political expediency. It's too easy for democrats to beat this guy.
Sarah writes: Sunday, December, 16, 2007 4:11 PM
tim_cuchullaine, you make me
a proud american. I have not read much about Ron Paul, maybe I will find out more about him.
Sarah writes: Sunday, December, 16, 2007 4:27 PM
Brianakira - welcome to
the world of republicans who are not confused about the inelectability of Romney. I am beginning to think Romniac strategy is to buy the endorsements in wall street, use that money to fund missionaries who will tell people "the truth about mormonism" while campaigning for Romney. Then when nominated call all americans who do not support Romney biggots or confused. This strategy might have worked if Romney was consistent on at least ONE ISSUE. However, intimidating republicans who see Romney as an unpredictable person and president does not seem to be gaining him much traction in the polls. How can this guy unite the center-right. He has something in his record that offends just about everybody. Hey, 24 states have defined marriage as 1 man and 1 woman - even OR and CA. Romney, defines marriage as person A to person B, Gender and number of people in the marriage is irrelevant. Hey I am beginning to think we should nominate this guy, just so that Hillary or any other democrat can enjoy the pleasure of showing voters what a phony he really is!

Why Kevin likes Mitt too much
Kevin, nice love letter to Mitt.
But... Let's examine what else you like about Mitt so much.

Higher fees.Mitt raised those in Mass., different than taxes? sure, but they still increase the cost of living $$

Mitt Governed the 4th highest tax burdened state in the country. Raised fee's not taxes since they're already paying high enough tax rates.

Sanctuary cities in Mass. while Mitt was Governor.
Mitt said today on "Meet the Press" those here illegaly should sign up for citizenship or sign up to become permanent citizens. Sounds like amnesty??? Or perhaps just giving those who broke the law an advantage over those waiting in line.
Does Mitt have a plan yet?

Pro life & CHOICE. Mitt made a pledge to continue what Mitt's mother felt was right in 1994 senate bid. Recently broke that pledge. Now pro life, not choice.
Sorry mom.

I sincerely apologize to everyone for bringing
"mom" into the debate, but Mitt is the one who made that part of his run for office in Mass.

Mailers with half truth's smearing Huckabee and now McCain. Going negative is always an endearing trait, people like that.

Accused Huckabee of slamming Bush: (bunker mentality quote), while Mitt slams Bush minutes later. Mitt's quote: "We were under-staffed and under-manned and under-planned" regarding Iraqi war.

Wrong on the surge.
Mitt said, "Today, were making good progress with the surge and it's working."
But not solong ago Mitt said we need to set a time table for withdrawl because the surge is not working.

Now I see why you like him sooo much.

Higher Fees. FLIP
Sanctuary cities. FLOP
Both ways on the war. SHAKE
Pro choice & pro life. BAKE

Going negative.
All great reasons to like Mitt too much.

If and when you read up on Ron Paul make sure you get both sides of the story. His supporters make him sound like the second coming of Christ, so be selective in your sources of info. RP has some very serious and very scary baggage, but by all means read up on him.

I appreciate your brand of lady-like smashmouth. Keep up the good posts.

By all means, read up on Ron Paul. He has been giving the same speeches since 1976. He has never voted for a tax increase or to expand executive power. He has even put forth legislation to reduce congressional pay at the rate of inflation, since congressional action causes inflation.

We Paulpots, as Kevin dubs us, do not look for a political messiah; rather, we want the restoration of the tension and harmony so beautifully woven through the U.S. Constitution. No more Deciders, no more rubber-stamp congresses, no more pontificating judges. Let us own the labor of our two hands and live peacefully with our neighbors. But keep the military strong and modern in the event our neighbors won't return the favor. No amnesty; no anchor babies; no sending our boys into harm's way to enforce U.N. mandates. Peaceful trade with all; entangling alliances with none.

But why . . . ?
If Mormons are so great a majority in the state of Utah and they are all mindless automatons doing precisely what the church tells them to do why did they EVER vote for a governor who was not a Mormon? I don't understand it? It simply doesn't make sense.
