Watch out kids! Those fish and chips you are eating could get you taken away from your parents!

"A government association representing more than 400 councils in England and Wales said parents of dangerously obese children are at risk of losing them."

I know that governments have had burgeoning stretches of power, but to take over the parental responsibility of nutrition at the family dinner table is exceeding the limit.  I don't mind if cafeterias in government sponsored schools choose to serve healthier foods...but don't decide equate childhood obesity with parental neglect.

The point.
The goverenment requires us to put our children in safety seats in a car to protect their safety. The larger point here (pun intended) is that allowing a child to become obese is child abuse. It is a potentially fatal illness.

How about the reverse? Reward parents (tax breaks!) who have healthy, athletic children.

interesting question
I will fully admit that I am not totally comfortable with this. However, upon thinking about it, I see where the British government is coming from. Think of the opposite scenario: if a child was clearly suffering from malnourishment or close to starvation in a way that seriously threatens the child's health, should the parent(s) be considered responsible for that situation? I think so. Reading the linked article, it also sounds like the government is making a distinction between a child that is simply overweight and one that is seriously obese.
