"Special" Reporting no more...

A sad milestone is playing out on the television as I scribble these words.

In 1996 he moved into the prime time news life of the American public. Coming over from his assignment at ABC as Senior White House Correspondent Brit Hume was the face of a new energetic work with one simple objective... tell both sides of the story they cover.

It was brilliant, because while they trailed CNN and MSNBC for years in terms of satellite and cable systems that carried their channel, they overtook the two "elder" cable channels - even before parity in number of outlets.

But within that programming philosophy sat a little hour long feature each night Monday through Friday that did a great deal more than just tell the two sides to every story, but actually educated the viewer with articulate defense from the two sides in a nightly panel. A panel's whose originator--Hume--became the most important ten minutes of television every night.

It wasn't just the panel though, Hume's keen insight, experience, and consummate professional approach to posing the questions, pinning the panelists to questions they did not wish to answer at times also provided some great drama.

He is 65 now. And he wants to spend time with his grandchildren, study his Bible, and if possible play a little golf. Who can blame him?

He has been the most objective, most balanced, and most credible prime time television network anchor since his arrival on the nightly scene. He exits the most watched news source on the planet at the complete top of his game.

We would be silly to do anything other than wish him well.

But tonight at the end of his hour long broadcast, television news will suffer from the absence of the most important news voice of his generation... (No it wasn't Brokaw, Rather, or Jennings.)

Brit you will be missed.

You've taught us much, we owe you far more. So for all who won't have the chance to tell you personally, take this as your ultimate salute!

Brit Hume
is great, too bad he will carry the shame of Fox News on his shoulders.
Baby Karl writes: Tuesday, December, 23, 2008 7:29 PM
What shame Tyler...
By every measurement possible.

Fox News Channel is the most successful, highest rated 24 hour news service ever to exist.

It was Brit's vision to create a channel that was actually fair and balanced.

And it success validates that vision.

Well Said, KMC @ 7:29 p.m. EST.

Very nice tribute by McCullough!

NOTE TO BRIT:

"Fox News. Fair, Balanced and Unafraid".

Thanks, Brit. You're already missed.

AND............

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Nice Column
One thing sad to see is his fellow news people treating this top of the heap journalist's retirement as a non event like the babies they are due to the Fox affiliation.

Only liberals can sit with a straight face and describe a news network which they never actually watch that has one liberal and one conservative debate every single news story day in and day out from program to program as unbalanced, as it is they who are the unbalanced ones. AS far as I'm concerned they give liberal spinners too much airtime.

And not reporting the retirement of a fellow news giant like Brit Hume is incredibly biased and what we've come to expect from the newly formed OMC, Obama Media Corps, a worthless propaganda arm that would make Marx and Lenin red faced with joy.

Brit will be missed
He always gave the most thoughtful and articulate insight on stories, his wry wit and well-placed comments were never snarky or unfair. I think of Brit as the most professional and curteous man in the news business; and I will miss him! God Bless him and his family; may he rest and enjoy a well-earned space of time outside the spotlight.

Thank you, Brit
for your service to the truth. May you enjoy a LONG retirement. God Bless you!

Old enough...
I'm old enough to remember Brit Hume's father, Paul Hume. He was a music critic who wrote unkind things about Margaret Truman's singing. Harry S. got Hume on the phone and used some very colorful language to express his displeasure with the review.

I'm sure Brit is a fine person, and I'm very sorry for the loss of his son.

However, people who work for Fox are not "journalists," they are mini-ministers of propaganda for the Bush administration. "Fair and Balanced" is about as accurate as "WMDs in Iraq."

"owever, people who work for Fox are not "journalists," they are mini-ministers of propaganda for the Bush administration."

What on earth are you going to do on Januray 21st when there is no more Bush administration to "blame". What's your ridiculous excuse going to be then? Just can't stand success can you?

It's that kind of idiotic, childish comment (coupled to your stupid handle) that has you winning the "Ignoramus of the Year" award here on TH. Congrats on the award.

I don't think your husband's jealous of your time on TH, he's probably just embarrassed at what a fool you make of yourself everytime you put fingers to keyboard. It's plain to any of us that you don't even watch Fox or you would know just how many high profile Lib commentators actually work for them. Mara Liaison, Bob Beckel, Juan Williams, Alan Colmes, Susan Estrich, Kriten Powers etc etc.....just to name a few.

Brit Hume
I have watched Brit Hume on television ever since he began and I was sad to hear of his retirement but wish him and his family the best.
I do not even waste my time watching any of the other "so-called" news shows. I put FOX News on in the morning and it stays on until my local news comes on in the evening for 1/2 hour and then back on FOX.
Sometimes I feel they get carried away with some of their arguments but at least I am hearing the truth and not what some President of a News channel thinks I want to hear.
Brit Hume, Bill O'Reilly, Neil Cavuto and Shepard Smith are among my favorites and I was glad to hear who they have chosen to take Brit's place. I may go back to watching Hannity & Combs now that Alan is going to be gone but I quit watching them because of Alan's attitude and not giving guests time to speak if they did not agree with him. He and his wife were on Fox & Friends one morning and I enjoyed listening to them and it's too bad he doesn't have more of that attitude on the show.
Brit will be missed by many but I don't think Alan will be missed at all unless you have the liberal mind-set he does.
Keep up the good work "FOX NEWS"!
