 "Game On!" I live in the New York metro, but I will gladly walk districts, phone bank, and whatever else is needed to see this man replace Arlen Specter in the U.S. Senate. As President Bush, Senator Santorum, and Hugh Hewitt should have five years ago. (All three heroes of mine... but today leveling immense pain.)

Right now, there are 57 Dems and 40 GOPers in the Senate.
If Al Franken is ever seated (and I personally can't wait for that just to watch Bill O'Reilly explode on live TV) and Spector is now a Democrat, that puts the dems at 59?
Still quite shy of the 2/3 majority needed.

There's not a lot in the day-to-day activities of the Senate that requires a 2/3rds majority. Rules changes, expelling a member, ratifying a treaty, etc. Overriding a veto requires 2/3rds, but vetoes are unlikely with the President and senate majority both Democratic.
The big problem in recent years has been (the threat of) filibusters. Overriding those requires a 3/5ths majority -- 60 votes -- and with Specter, Franken, and Bernie Sanders, the Democrats have that. The GOP got its chance to participate in bipartisan activities, refused to do so, and that door is now firmly shut behind Arlen Specter. |
