"If you asked me to..."

Oh no she di'in't!

Yeah... she did...

Patti Labelle played the race card simply because she got outsung by Celine.

Labelle was suffering in Monte Carlo yesterday when she related to the press that the only reason Celine's version of "If You Asked Me To" made it all the way to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, while hers only made it to number 79 three years previous - was because she was a cracker...

"Why do I think Celine had the sales and I didn't? Because she's a white girl... You want me to be honest? That's why," Labelle told the MonacoRevue.

"People pay more respect to white artists who sing well before they do black women," she continued. "I've been singing for 45 years and that's an obstacle that I'm still ... I'm getting over it because I'm fabulous. You know, so you can't beat me up. You can't make me feel less than I am because whenever I get the microphone I'm gonna show you who I am. But the industry is very racist."

NOTE TO PATTI: A little dose of reality... Could it just be that Celine sang circles around you on the actual recordings? Let's test the theory - CLICK HERE to listen to both versions. Then fill in the blank.

"_________________" is the reason that Celine's version got to number 4 on the Hot 100.

UPDATE: Welcome to all the "Butterflies" who are flying by. Look argue all you want about the industry being rigged. Motown was developed by entrepeneurs specifically to counter what were at the time the types of prejudices Patti was referring to 20 years previous to her showdown over the single with Celine.

At the time that Celine's version of the song emerged - Celine was but a mere babe in the recording industry, barely spoke english and had no "industry heft" to toss around. Merely three years prior - LaBelle had more than just some. She was a catalyst and icon to the R&B, Pop, and Gospel communities across the world - and FAR MORE well known to the masses than Dion at that given time.

With her millions of dollars, legions of fans, and already firmly established industry presence - the only comparison between the two at the time - was that LaBelle was at the top of her game and Celine was merely beginning. (Not one gold record to her name at the point in time.)

IT IS LUDICROUS for LaBelle to argue that in the late 80's or early 90's that some upstart had more radio, marketing, branding cache. And if that was true - SHE should have fired her PR operation and found competent people.

Overlooked in all the "Kevin's just a racist, closeted Celine lover" stupidity is the fact that the arrangements - from a purely musical prespective are overwhelmingly similar. The voicings of the instruments on Celine's version have much more presence and pop to them. And most overwhelming is the clear command Celine's voice has of even the opening notes - much less the soaring bridge and final choruses down the stretch.

LaBelle - is and always has been a LEGEND. She will go down in the music hall of fame for doing what few could - sustain a legendary career over FIVE decades. But the reason her version of this song only made it to 79 on the Hot 100, and Celine's made it to 4 HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO with Celine being white.

It had to do with the product - and LaBelle's, on this individual song, at this one isolated place and time - was the inferior.

Be a true lady, admit that the other one - outsang you. Don't be some AlJesse wannabe and blame it on mysterious white people conspiracy theories. Deal with facts. Open your ears - and if you really think you could have done it better - then get back in the studio erase the original tracks and kick it...

And I say this as a former Radio Music programmer using my professional judgement of what would and would not have made a quality single.

Pro-musicians know that thick skin is a requirement in the industry. Taking criticism and making the most of it is the key to success... not making excuses.

you are a racist
it is one thing to object to to labelle's playing of the race card and to discuss it intelligently, it is quite another to paraphrase labelles statement translated into what you think is how blacks talk.

her statement was articulate if wrong headed, yours is just ignorant.

To mock ignorance...

You may have gone a bit overboard with you "mocking" of ignorance; the whole headline is disrespectful and portrays Ms. Labelle as some sort of ignorant creature of the ghetto. If you want to take shots at what she said, fine...just do it in a bit more respectful tone. You can disagree without being disagreeable!

As for the recordings, I will tend to choose Patti LaBelle, because she is one of my favorite singers, while I am no fan of Celine Dion. It is all a matter of taste, not of talent.
Baby Karl writes: Tuesday, November, 27, 2007 1:19 PM
flagwaver... not a bit more overboard...
Than Patti Labelle claiming that the system was rigged against her song - when it is an OBVIOUSLY inferior recording.

LISTEN to the two arrangements...

You don't have to be a fan of anyone.

But LaBelle has GOT to take responsibility for her own efforts - and if someone comes along and does it one better - true graciousness would be to congratulate her and MOVE ON!
oneeye writes: Tuesday, November, 27, 2007 1:20 PM
How about modesty?
Celine is dressed as if she wants to be respected.
LaBelle is dressed as if she wants to be purchased.

you weren't mocking ignorance you were mocking your percieved assumption of how blacks talk.

there is a huge difference.

in this case she did not express herself in an inarticulate way, so instead of attacking her thought process you attacked the "supposed" way black americans converse.

if you don't understand the difference you are less intelligent than i give you credit for.

let's just clarify the comment
First of all, this article portrays Patti Labelle as some kind of scathing ghetto princess which she is not. She was not dissing Celine Dion, whom she admires dearly. She is not afraid to say what others are hesitant to- it is so much easier to market a white singer with a decent singing voice than a black soul singer. That is not racist , it is true. Patti was not attacking Celine and after forty five years in the music business, she has earned that right. But this was not evidence of a catfight.
Edamon50 writes: Tuesday, November, 27, 2007 2:23 PM
Ty & religiouslib
I have to agree with both of you to an extent. To turn this comment by Patti LaBelle into some catfight or instance of racism is wrongheaded, IMO but KMC will not ever see that. He has obviously decided what his action line will be on this one, and nothing that we say is going to change it.

As for the differing arrangement of the songs, that goes to exactly the point that I was trying to make...it is all personal taste when it comes to what music one likes, or dislikes. For example, there is a gospel/praise song that has been recorded by a white artist (his name escapes me, but I think he wrote the song) and by Kirk Franklin. I have listened to bothe versions of "Our God is an Awesome God", and I prefer the arrngement that Kirk Franklin uses. That does not mean that the other version is bad, it's just not my cup of tea. tha same thing with a secular song like "Superstar"...I like the original Carpenters version, but I LOVE the Luther Vandross arrangement. Same song, arranged differently, but one is not necessarily better than the other!

But maybe this is just too far over the heads of some...like those who decide that the way to "mock ignorance" is to portray Patti LaBelle as some sort of ghetto maven.

thank you for your civil and reasoned response.

it is just hard for me to fathom that someone with his own talk show cannot understand the racist implications in his statement.

this guy has a tendancy for hyperbole anyway so maybe it is just that.

I Will Always Love You
Hey this can not be true white or black. What about I Will Always Love You Dolly Parton wrote it White Whitney Houston made it number 1. It is all about the voice Celine is just a better singer sorry Patti.

Patti Vs. Celine
I was going to mention "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton & Whitney Houston also. In addition; "The Greatest Love of All" performed by Whitney Houston was originally recorded by George Benson. Needless to say whose version was a bigger hit. And if Patti's argument rang true, all of Michael Bolton's covers of African American artists would have out done the originals. Hah!

Patti LaBelle Is Correct 100%
i am a huge fan of ms. labelle's, i have met her many times, been on stage during lady marmalade, i am a huge music lover of all types and have been to many "shows" or "concerts" but ms. labelle's version of IF YOU ASKED ME TO was the better one, you could feel it in your soul, in fact why dont you do this whoever wrote this article...get PATTI LABELLE LIVE IN NEW YORK and listen to the DIVA MEDLEY songs ms. labelle turned down that other artists ended up doing, anytime ms. patti sings someone elses songs, hey another example is all the tracks on her CLASSIC MOMENTS CD, they become a PATTI SONG. don't mess with our ms. patti or i'll send the butterflies here to this link, in fact i will anyways. go ahead and laugh at the word butterflies too, ms. patti is a special legend and a lady, she just keeps it real, wish celine and others could do the same. i saw circus de celine in vegas and felt absolutely nothing but dizzy from everything flying all over the place.

give me patti labelle anyday.

How can you be so insensitive?
Let me say that I love Patti Labelle, and I like Celine Dion. Neither of us can say what Ms. Labelle has experienced in her many years in the entertainment industry. She being there, and doing and we on the outside looking in she would have a little more experience in knowing the in's and out's of the business. It is very easy for us to say things when we have not walked in or experienced the things others have, especially when we are not in the business ourselves.
I also believe Ms. Labelle who I have had the pleasure of meeting personally. I believe Ms. Labelle genuinely likes Celine Dion she was just stating a fact of how she see's things in the music industry. Whether you like one singer or the other let's not get it twisted racism is still alive and running wild in this country.

This "Diva Catfight" is Non-Existent
I won't comment on the fact your title shows your unfortunate ignorance, or by imagining some ridiculous competition between these two women you've made yourself a clear representation of the inconsiderate, disrespectful media and writer in general, or even how your silly replies show just how little you know about Patti Labelle. I think she made her point very clearly not just in the interview, but throughout her entire career. Celine Dion's version made it to the top of the charts not because of her voice, but because as a white woman she gets more media coverage, more marketing, more radio play. Yet still, Patti Labelle has had a wonderful career, remains the hardest working woman in show business, and one of the most beloved entertainers. There is no competition between the two. Patti Labelle has been in the music industry way too long to even entertain that idea.
ladyeklips writes: Tuesday, November, 27, 2007 8:38 PM
patti/celine saga....
This debate can continue for eternity, depending on ones knowledge.

The average ‘Jo Bloggs’ who understands very little about the music industry is likely to have a different opinion to a music mogul.

The fact that Celine sold well with ‘If only you knew’ after Patti released it is unfortunately nothing new when it comes to black artists being undermined within the music industry. This was the very reason why Mr. Gordy set up Motown Records, so such artists would get represented efficiently.

This is even huge problem in the UK too. Record labels would much rather promote an all white acts to sing poor quality soul, r&b, reggae or jazz music than a talented black act? Ugly as it sounds, it’s the truth and reality!

So, Patti verses Celine?
This is a personal choice and preference, there are no right or wrong answers. However, I will delightfully express mine. The question posed is so ludicrous to me, and even a little unfair to Celine. The only person that can out sing Patti Labelle, is Patti Labelle. Celine can blow, but Patti will blow you down and hurt you in the process. Patti sings with soul, and to compare a soul filled vocal with a great vocal, (Celine) makes no musical sense at all!

Patti Labelle all the way.... (no contest)

Ms. LaBelle Is In a Class All To Herself
Pt 1:

Let me just set some things straight about Patti LaBelle: Comparing Patti LaBelle to Celine Dion or any other singer/performer for that matter is very much like a weather man comparing a Category 5 hurricane to a breeze. Patti LaBelle is a hurricane and the only thing you can do when you know a hurricane will be approaching is just get the hell out of the way, or if you're another performer, get the hell off the stage and watch from the wings, you won't get hurt there, because Patti can cut you from ear to ear with her voice if she decides to. Patti LaBelle is the only singer that can literally clear out your sinus' with the power of her voice when she cuts loose and let's it rip. She's a one woman storm on stage and among a few elite performers (Oprah comes to mind) that is as warm, genuine and gracious off stage as she is on. And I can say these things about her because I've had the pleasure of meeting Ms. LaBelle on several occasions. What makes Patti uniquely special and what separates her squarely from all other female performers past and present (and yes, this includes Celine Dion I am afraid, sorry Celine fans, but I must be honest) are 3 things: Her raw emotion mixed with explosive vocal power, Her untouchable lyrical phrasing and her uncanny ability to be uniquely herself by injecting her personality into everything she does. I know of no other performer possessing these 3 characteristics simultaneously, Patti really is in a class all to herself and cannot be compared to or included among other performers because when Patti sings, she's actually not performing, she's showing us additional sides to her unique personality. It's like having a friend and learning new things about them each time you see them.

Ms. LaBelle Is In a Class All To Herself
Pt 2:

If there are people who read this posting that do not agree with it, then they certainly do not understand the ' magic' of Patti LaBelle and should refrain from making any comments regarding the things she recently said about black female artists and Celine Dion. If you ask me, I think what Patti said was rather mild compared to what I know she is capable of saying. Trust me, I've heard her get funkier than that. And at 63 years young, with a career that has spanned nearly 50 years, Patti has earned the right to express her honest opinions any way the hell she wishes.

My favorite Patti line of all time, from the song Over the Rainbow, "If a teeny-weeny bird, can get up there and fly, over the rainbow then why can't I?"

There will only be one Patti LaBelle. She is in a class all to herself. I hope she realizes that.

Patti's version inferior..NADA! U.S. having a long history of prefering lightweight versions of songs initially recorded by Blacks..CORRECT ANSWER! That's just the way it has been for years and she just called it for what it is in the music industry.

MS. PATTI LABELLE - VS - CELINE
HOLD UP, WAIT A MINUTE,

THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH ME FOR YEARS.

IT HAS BOTHERED ME THAT CELINE HAS SUNG A SONG THAT WAS EARLIER RECORDED BY MOMMA PATTI AND CELINE GETS BIG TIME PROPS AND RECOGNITION BUT MOMMA PATTI GETS VERY LITTLE PROPS.
CELINE GOES TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS AND MOMMA PATTI MAKES IT WAY AT THE BOTTOM.

ANYONE WITH A BRAIN IN THEIR HEAD CAN SEE THAT IT WAS NOT BASED ON TALENT BUT COLOR.
MOMMA PATTI SUNG "IF YOU ASK ME TOO" WITH SOUL, EMOTION. (THAT'S THE WAY MOMMA DOES IT).
CELINE JUST SUNG THE SONG.
I'M NOT SAYING THAT CELINE DOESN'T HAVE TALENT, BUT WE "ALL" KNOW WHO HAS THE REAL VOCAL CORDS AKA 5 OCTAVE RANGE, SOUL STIRRING, HEAVEN SENT LEGENDARY, DIVALICIOUS, MS. PATTI LA BELLE!!!!

MOMMA WAS NOT "PLAYING" THE RACIAL CARD. SHE WAS JUST TELLING THE TRUTH. THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS SOOOO RACIST, IT'S JUST SICKENING AND YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE SAYING ANYTHING DIFFERENT NEED TO STEP BACK AND EXAMING THE SITUATION A LOT MORE CLOSELY. PLEASE DON'T BE FOOLED!!!

ALL ABOUT MOMMA PATTI
HEY SCOTT,

THIS IS FROM A DEVOTED, TRUE TO THE HEART, FOR LIFE PATTI LABELLE FAN. ;)

I'VE READ YOUR COMMENT AND I SO AGREE "IF A TEENY WEENY BIRD CAN GET UP AND FLY OVER THE RAINBOW, THAN WHY CAN'T I?????
BECAUSE THAT TEENY WEENY BIRD JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE WHITE AND FAVORED BY THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
I SURELY THINK SO!!!! (ONE LOVE)
