We'll blog it right here... bookmark this entry and come back...

The room is a buzz... everyone is returning from dinner and seem to be upbeat.

BTW... side note here. More people than I can count have come up voluntarily saying that they are fans of the column. Which is good to know since - THIS IS MY CROWD!

SPOTTED: Blumenthal - Olbermann's sidekick - no doubt doing interviews to later slice and dice and out of context make the Bible Thumpers look stupid...

PACKED HOUSE for Romney speech...

Just about every seat filled  and standing room only in the press area...

7:34pm - Feel good "Home" video from Ann Romney kicks it off...

7:35pm - Jay Sekulow to introduce... Man is he short, it's like Ziggy lookin' over the wall. Out of the shoot he praises Mitt's stand for marriage. Romney walks out to a standing ovation...

7:37pm - Thanks much all the way around... "protecting families" out of his mouth inside of 6 seconds... "I'm pro-family on every level - personal, professional AND political!"

7:38pm - "America's future will not be determined by heads of state but heads of households..."

7:38pm - quotes C.S. Lewis and invokes "Judao-Christian" quickly...

7:38pm - "Family is the economic engine of the society... touts statts demonstrating the value a Mother and Father brings to the kids, for child-rearing, illness, etc."

7:39pm - "A society is wealthier, healthier, and happier when it has strong families..."

7:39pm - "The most important work that goes on today is the work that goes on in the four walls of the American home..."

7:39pm - "Two parents are always the ideal for raising a family in America's society..."

7:40pm - "Ann and I are going to use the bully pulpit of America to teach children that before they make babies they should get married."

7:40pm - "68% of black kids are now born out of wedlock, and hats off to Bill Cosby for telling it how it is."

7:42pm - "If Ann gets to be first lady - her mission will be to encourage kids to stay in school, save sex for marriage, get married before having babies..."

7:43pm - "If I'm elected President I will outline policy that will encourage marriage not punish it!"

LOTS OF APPLAUSE so far - after almost every point...

7:43pm - "The tax penalty against marriage is OFFENSIVE!"

7:44pm - "If I become president I will reinstate the family impact statement."

7:44pm - "I will look to reinforce the rights of parents against schools that tramples those rights. No school should have the right to force second graders to read fairy tales about same-sex marriage."

7:45pm - "I will work to pass a marriage amendment to keep the institution defined as a relationship between one man and one woman."

STANDING OVATION...

7:47pm - "Every child deserves a MOTHER and a FATHER!"

7:47pm - "No longer just a Massachusetts issue, Iowa judge said that current marriage law serves only to harm same-sex couples..."

7:48pm - A federal marriage amendment is the only way we can protect marriage from being redefined unelected judges!

7:48pm - I WILL BE a pro-life president! Protect life and its sanctity... oppose military abortion, international aid abortions, oppose tax-payer funded abortions... and raise awareness of "snowflake babies."

7:49pm - "On every piece of legislation I came down every time on the side of life!"

7:50pm - "I know I'm a convert on this cause, but we WILL WIN this battle for the sanctity of human life!"

7:50pm - "I'm gonna fight the modern plague of internet pornography especially as it affects our kids!"

7:50pm - will push internet filter legislation...

7:51pm - And on internet predators: ONE STRIKE and you're ours - long prison sentences and ankle bracelets for the rest of your life...

7:51pm - "Young kids who have dinner five nights a week with their parents are six times less likely to use drugs..."

7:52pm - "I fixed health care in Massachusetts"

7:52pm - "Federal tax credit for homeschooling parents, I want to give them that credit to help defray the cost of those educational expenses..."

7:53pm - No capital gains tax on families of $200,000 or less...

7:54pm - The attack of the anti-religion religion of secularism has to come to an end. "We are a Nation Under God and we must have the right to live our life in Him!"

7:54pm - "Harry Reid is a bad example of Mormonism..."

7:55pm - "The three legs of the Republican Stool - defense conservatives, economic conservatives, and social conservatives."

7:56pm - "We're not going to beat Hillary Clinton by acting like Hillary Clinton!"

7:56pm - "This is a unique nation. It is essential to this nation for the family to remain strong."

7:57pm - "You know what we have to do and I can't wait until we can do it together!"

Protect Families to Preserve Marriage
Half of Romney's speech - judging by your timeline - was devoted to protecting families. Coincidentally, I have an item posted in the "Religion and Public Life" section of the Solutions Lab at americansolutions.com. There is no "Family and Home Life" section, or I would have posted there instead.

My solution is called "Protect Families to Preserve Marriage", the link is http://www.americansolutions.com/SolutionsLab/SolutionOverview.aspx?Solution=0b885b4b-dc21-4c20-8121-0fb0e1dc13a3.

I also have a new blog at fathers.townhall.com

FLIP FLOP MITT
It's so much fun watching the self-proclaimed "Values Voters" be forced to eat their own words!

God is SO great!!!! Justice does indeed belong to the Lord!!!!!

You people are going to have to endorse Mitt, even though you are convinced he is part of a cult, you know he was pro-choice and pro-gay rights as recently as recently as 10 years ago.

Oops! And he says his views of abortion have "evolved," the most dreaded word for the right.

Get ready for the "FLIP FLOP MITT" ads to start flying!!!!!

Nonsense

The flip-flop bit is tired. And just as it was when used against Kerry, it reflects simpletons who'd rather shout down their opponents than listen to and analyze their positions. (Yes- I voted for Bush twice but based on positions not slogans on beach shoes or swift boat ads.)

The simple truth is Mitt pledged not to alter existing laws when he ran for governor and like anyone with integrity, he didn't. The fact that some evangelicals want government officials to legislate and execute their theology rather than work within the confines of the law is absolutely frightening. The law and the gospel are two separate things - the former is good, the latter is great.

As for the pro-choice hooey, that's nonsense also. It is one thing to be vehemently pro-life. It is quite another to be completely convinced that the government should define morality. I'm pro-integrity but I don't want the local sheriff arresting my daughter when she lies about getting her homework done. Thinking people all struggle with drawing the line between individual moral responsibility and government intrusion.

(Look Chris! I can cross post all over townhall, too ;-)

Nice try, Catherine!
You might hope the "FLIP FLOP" label is old, but it's never been more appropriate than it is with Romney.

I think I could vote for Mitt. But the self-proclaimed "Values Voters" will have to do a lot of 'splaining why he was pro choice and is now pro life.

Great article here: http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/07/03/clarity_sought_on_romneys_abortion_stance/

Or, why he supported limited gay/lesbian rights at one time, but not now:

Details here:
http://www.palmcenter.org/press/dadt/releases/gop_position_on_gay_troops_at_odds_with_expert_military_opinion

And just how will all the Born Agains back down from their comments that all Mormons are a part of some demonic cult?

Sorry to disappoint, Catherine, but FLIP FLOP is alive and well and just might be our next President!

How to sell a flip-flop...
..depends largely on the direction of the flop. A speech might sound like this: "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was LOST, but now, I'm FOUND... was blind, but now I see...."

Particularly since the greatest Conservative president to serve in my lifetime was once the Democrat Governor of California, I think Republicans will accept a candidate who 'comes to his senses' just about as well as Liberals accepted John (stuck in Iraq, voted for it before I voted against it) Kerry.

Besides, there's a fundamental difference between "flip..(wait 20 years)..flop" and "flip..(here's the overnight polling data)..flop". Duhh.

The winner!
And the award for the single most brilliant job of spin control goes to Steve!

Please note that in my previous post, I said I like Romney and could vote for him.

My delight is watching this motley crew of "Values Voters" have to eat such an enormous plate of crow.

I hope this marks the beginning of the end of the stangle hold the Religious Right has had over our party for the last few years.

steve66oh writes: Monday, October, 22, 2007 2:25 PM
Chris,
Thanks for the award... reminds me of the award that psychic John Edwards won in that episode of South Park - "Biggest [feminine hygeine product] In The Universe". Anyway, I don't disagree with your assessment of the fundamentalist, "Moral Majority" values voter wing of our party. I am a "pro-choice" Republican, because "choice" is not just about abortion. The Second Amendment is not about hunting or target practice, it's ALL about "choice" - choosing our government. A fundamental tenet of most GOP philosophy is "limited government" - a declaration that people should be free to make their own choices (and accept the consequences). My issue, parental rights, is all about the government's unjust interference with my ability to participate in decisionmaking about my son's future. The R.R. would happily expand government into areas of social policy which should be administrated as community values through community institutions like churches.
Chris Manfred writes: Monday, October, 22, 2007 3:40 PM
Agree.
Steve, I agree with just about all you wrote. Romney would be ok with me, certainly better than Hillary. But the RR has hijacked our party and our faith for so long that I think it's probalby going to finally cost the GOP an election.
steve66oh writes: Monday, October, 22, 2007 4:47 PM
Ironically...
I just got a enewsletter from Newt. He talks about Values Voters and his book "Rediscovering God in America". He writes: "What our secular friends don't understand ... the America that gave us freedom ... was an America based on the rights given to us by our Creator." - What the religious Right doesn't understand is that THE ONE right God gave us, the one that separates us from animals, is FREE WILL. Which is another way to say CHOICE! We simply can not legislate correct choices, because the minute they become law, they stop being choices. Conservatives MUST have faith that the goodness of mankind will triumph over the evil. To do otherwise is to presume to know more about human nature than God Himself.
