According to this report in today's New York Times. GOP leadership is letting die the immigration debate until after the election.

Stupid move - much more in the GOP tradition of Trent Lott, than Ronald Reagan.

How 'bout a good unified message to the world about how with only a little bit of Presidential resources, illegal immigration is significantly improving? How 'bout asking voters to send them back and finish the job? How 'bout pointing out that the Democrats have NO MESSAGE or SOLUTIONS to illegal immigration - other than amnesty?

Where are the courageous leaders - when they are most needed...?

I think it's good news
That's funny that you should post this. I just now did a Blog on why it's good news. I'm not sure how to post a link to it but here goes nothing:

agree

If the Senate Republicans back down and allow an enforcement bill to go forward, that would be better than doing nothing.

However:

1). if the Republicans were to spend between now and election day debating what kind of amnesty to approve, that won't play in Peoria and they will go up in flames.

2). Even if they do nothing, illegal immigration is a potent weapon in this election. Look at the case of Rick Santorum. The Republicans simply have to point out that they want enforcement and the Democrats want amnesty.

What about the amnesty Republicans? They will have to fend for themselves. If they were smart they would realize the only way they stand a ghost of a chance of having much longer of a political career is to renounce amnesty and get with the program. Hagel, Graham, etc. are sitting ducks for primary challenges in 2008.

Of course, they may be political toast anyway. Anyone with his fingerprints on S 2611 may find the next time he's up for re-election that having that on his record is a political kiss of death.
