"Faith good!"
Hugh is making a big fat hairy deal about how Mitt's speech is likely to be about religious liberty... But that is categorically different than how the rest of the reports have termed the speech in the media today. While Hugh and Article6 both assert the speech will be on the topic of religious liberty - the REST of the media and in large part the blogosphere are referencing the speech as comparable to John F. Kennedy's challenge as a Roman Catholic.
One thing is certain - by the end of the week, Mitt will pick up major coverage and suck much of the media oxygen from the room.
I hope he has all of us sitting on the edges of our seats as he exercises freedom of speech to talk about freedom of religion! What a great occasion.
Hold on to your oxygen masks. This will be a pivotal event in the campaign trail.
GO MITT! |

Huckabee may yet regret making Mormonism an issue in this election. It certainly has knocked him below the fold and made him a side-story . . . |
|
The media for the most part has turned negative on Huck. Romney is getting a lot of speculation right now. I really do not think he will address religion so much as freedom of and freedom from religion.
I would talk about the unorthodoxy of the various founding fathers and there religious beliefs. It is hard for radicals to call Jefferson, Washington, Franklin etc members of a cult. I would site Roger Williams and see how different Huck is.
Romney will do whatever he can to prevent the anti's from using this speech as the start of hunting season on Mormonism. He has already said his target markets are reasonable people who will listen with an open mind.
Romney has the stage. He has a chance to make this one of the great speeches of the decade. He can establish himself as an orator. Something he can not do well in the cattle call debate format.
He can set a new criteria for judging candidates. Huck may be good in the cattle calls but Romney may be just as good in oration. We will see, just how good Romney really is.
This is his defining moment. This establishes his image in the minds of the voters who are just tuning in and in the minds of the press.
For the press this is a rite of passage. A test of worthiness. They know that Rudy is in trouble. So far they have puffed and now seem to be reigning Huck in. I am not sure who the MSM candidate will be if Rudy slips on scandal. I do not think the media are that enamored with McCain or Fred. This speech may determine who they support Romney or Huck. |

He will simply call more attention to his religion, and thats not going to help at all. Of course it may not hurt him either- depending of course, on how provocative and controversial or bland his speech is.
Showing himself an orator only reinforces the perception that he is a greasy Slickster like Bill Clinton.
David Limbaugh told him the truth, but he's in panic mode and taking advice from Orin Nuthatch who thinks the concerns about his religion are based on the idea the mormom Church will tell him what to do. But nobody seriously believes that. It's the fantastic nature of his Church's beliefs that call his judgement and astonishing credulousness into the spotlight.
True enough: he will suck the o2 out of the room for a few days after he spouts (however bombastically)familar truisms from college pol science 101 courses about the separation of church and state.
But in the end, people instinctively understand that there's nothing unconstitutional about evaluating a candidate's religion and voting based on that evaluation- and mitt wont get many votes by moralizng on that.
stick a fork in him; he's done!
