My publishing editor sent me this note...

From David Frum's Diary on the National Review Online...

Sorry to dissent from my colleagues on the Corner, but once the murmurs over the oratory subside, people are going to realize: that speech did not work. Here's why:

"There is one fundamental question about which I often am asked. What do I believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. My church's beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths. Each religion has its own unique doctrines and history. These are not bases for criticism but rather a test of our tolerance."

To be blunt, Romney is saying:

It is legitimate to ask a candidate, "Is Jesus the son of God?"

But it is illegitimate to ask a candidate, "Is Jesus the brother of Lucifer?"

It is hard for me to see a principled difference between these two questions, and I think on reflection that the audiences to whom Romney is trying to appeal will also fail to see such a difference. Once Romney answered any question about the content of his religious faith, he opened the door to every question about the content of his religious faith. This speech for all its eloquence will not stanch the flow of such questions.

Bad move - and one with very unfair results to a candidate who all must acknowledge is a man who has proven that his mind actually operates in a highly empirical, data-driven, and uncredulous way.

Had he focused instead on simply arguing that presidents need only prove themselves loyal to American values, he would have been on safe ground. Instead, he over-reached, super-adding to his civic appeal an additional appeal to voters who demand faith in Jesus as a requirement in a president. That is an argument that will not work - and a game Mitt Romney cannot win.

You were wrong
What's the big deal? We all have off days. To now scour the internet looking for evidence that you were indeed right and that Hugh was wrong is getting a bit much.

It was a great speech.

David is the Al Gore of Christianity
Mormons do not believe in the ancient Catholic Creed that God the Father/Jesus Christ/Holy Ghost are multiple personalities of the same God.

Consequently, Mormons believe that Jesus is the literal created Son of God. Therefore, Since God created Jesus, did he not also create us ... and Lucifer too? If Jesus is our 'elder brother' then by inference he is also the 'elder brother' of each of us and all of God's creations, including Lucifer.

You must have learned reckless 'Spin' from Al Gore, who can turn a hot summer day into the end of the earth.

I find your comments prejudiced and condemnatory with no desire for understanding

... pretty much the same ploy the Jewish Sanhedrin and Herod used to convict Christ himself.

and teppe YOU are proving Frum right...
And Hugh wrong...

It was entirely UNNECESSARY to open the can of worms...

But what do bigots know... certainly not one's own faith huh?

RUSH TOO!
RUSH said this after the speech on his show:

THE CRITICISMS NOW BEING LEVIED AT THIS JUST DOES'NT FIT THE MOMENT, WHICH IS WHY I THINK SOME CAMPAIGNS ARE BEHIND THIS.

Wow, sounds alot like Hugh.

I guess you dont have to be a Mitt guy to think this speech is beyond criticism.

Sorry KMC ... but it's Frums can opener
Sorry for the tone, I thought Romney's speech was very dignified, unlike Frum's comments.

It bothers me when people take things out of context for the sole purpose of condemnation.

Frum's comment that Mormons believe that "Christ is Lucifer's Brother", as opposed to thier belief that he is "the Savior of the world, God's begotten (created) Son, and consequently the brother of all God's creations (including Lucifer)" rankled me since it is essentially a twist of logic for the purpose of making Mormons look sinister and satanic.

Frum's religous "hack job" is frankly, unChristian (aka hypocritic) in its dishonesty and mean spritedness.
