The Lovely Bride and I had discussed weeks ago how we had no real plans or desire to see the new Frank Miller movie 300.

For me this changed this morning after AllahPundit pointed me to a review that reveals how liberals are responding to 300.

"...a textbook example of how race-baiting fantasy and nationalist myth can serve as an incitement to total war."

"Leonidas likes to rally the troops with bellowed speeches about 'freedom, honor, and glory,' promising that they will be remembered for having created 'a world free from mysticism and tyranny.'"

So if liberal bloggers are outraged - especially THIS outraged - it seems to me I need to see what the fuss is.

UPDATE: Dean's got the 411 on how liberal movie critics are responding. Seems to be a clean sweep. They are so afraid of this movie they seem to be questioning the manhood of men who do go see it. I'd still love to know what Medved says about the film but I'm more strongly inclined now than I have been yet to run not walk to the theater when it opens today.

King Leonidas and the Spartans
Personally, I deeply admire Leonidas and his men. Their rear guard action held the Persians long enough for the bulk of the Greek forces to escape. Soon after, Athenian Admiral Themosticles destryoed the Persian Navy at the Battle of Salamis, and the Persians were forced to retreat. The remainder of their army was defeated at Platae.

For all that, I wouls absolutely NOT characterize the Spartans as fighting for freedom. The Spartans were oligarchs (which formed the basis for the disasterous Pelepponesian War some 25 years later against democratic Athens). The Spartans were fighting for Greek independance, which should not be confused with freedom. They are not the same thing.
