Dean Barnett and I have wagered a fat juicy steak and a brew on the all important question: "Does Blake make it through" to the finals of American Idol?

After last night's performances - and considering the demographic politic of the contestants who are left - the issue of Blake going home is settled - he's in!

The real question will be, "Which Diva stays?"

I can not tell a lie - I saw the graphs - and the same info that nearly insures Blake's success dooms my prediction on Jordin. But I suppose I can always hope.

Don't get me wrong - Melinda can sing circles around tons of people. I just felt that last night was indicative of the problem she's faced from the beginning. Her appeal is a little on the older side.

The reason that I felt Blake was safe through to the finals is that while he may be a slightly less talented singer - he has two overwhelming strengths: 1. He KNOWS who he is  2. He never forgot it.

Blake has hit the hot spot for the 12 year old girl vote every week. The girls with their sidekicks and cell phones texting their brains out. He winked at 'em. He blew kisses to them. He sang songs to them. And they in return have catapulted him to the finals.

American Idol voters also tend to reward individuality over raw talent as well. Just look at last year - Taylor was the wierd fun guy. Kat McPhee was the vocalist - beautiful, glamorous, and relatively boring by comparison.

Which brings us to Melinda's dilemma. She's the most seasoned singer in the contest, but she's not as sexy as Jordin, and neither are 1/4th as original as Blake. He has taken risks every week - risks to everyone watching - except 12 year old girls. And that voting block with their PDAs will earn me a fabulous dinner with Mr. Soxblog!

AND ONE MORE THING - SIMON COWELL: Enough with the blatant campaigning on behalf of the candidate you wish would win. The other judges don't do it - and just because Melinda was tanking in the polling over the last several weeks makes no difference.

There have been many subtleties that have been used to unfair advantage in Idol history. Fantasia's baby (Lakisha's story of her baby), Chris Richardson's "shout out" to Va Tech, and Simon last night literally begging America to put Melinda in the finals.

What happens when you do this is you push poll perhaps thousands of fence sitters that might not vote a certain way. And the goal of American Idol is to let the people decide.

And if you don't stop it - we will release your first ever TV Debut footage - Mr. Big fan of go-cart racing!
