Number 1 in HER heart, in 2nd or 3rd everywhere else...

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I am. Rasmussen does not show Romney leading in ANY Super Tuesday state where they have conducted polling: McCain leads/tied in 6, Huckabee leads/tied in 3, Romney leads/tied in 0.

If this is how it plays out - look for a very un-motivated GOP base in November.

Crikey... McCAIN????????

After all the debates and ideas and options WE ARE STUCK with the man who likes to give conservatives and republicans the finger day after day?

THIS is the best and brightest?

Perhaps Crazy Ed Rollins is right - if McCain gets the nomination - perhaps the Reagan Revolution IS dead...

Romney cannot win Republicans
What makes anyone think he can beat Hillary or Obama. Hope? That is not going cut it. Mitt will lose. Go look at the head to heads in Real Clear Politics. Mitt is and has been about a dozen points behind Hillary and the high teens low twenties behind Obama consistently.

McCain beats both Hillary and Obama.

You can thank Huckabee

He's staying in it just to spite Mitt, and so he can hopefully feed at the McCain trough as Sec. of Health and Human Services...

Thanks Huck! You've really helped your party by splitting the conservative vote and ensuring a McCain candidacy.

Sheesh. We have had gone through what, seven states and we are going to anoint a winner who has yet to crack the 40% mark in any state he has run in or won? Give me a break.

This is hardly a McCain juggernaut. For one thing, he never wins conservatives of any stripe (fiscal, evangelical or hawks) and second, HuckAJoke has been running interference for McCain from Day 1, in hopes of getting the VP slot, while draining votes from Mitt. Romney is essentially running against two opponents (even though one has zero chance of being nominated) and of course, the MSM is giving McCain so much free press, that he hardly has to run any ads. Which sure helps since McCain is very low on money to boot.

If HuckAJoke had any class, he would drop out.
schoony writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:07 PM
Not so fast
How many states are voting on Super Tuesday? 22, not 9. The dates on some of these polls occurred a week before Florida plus the number supporting Huckabee might be going down. We already know Romney leads in Utah and Mass. Also, you haven't included Colorado, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota, Arizona, plus a few other states. McCain probably leads in Arizona, but you have to realize that Conservatives across the U.S. and Mormons in the West can help Romney pull off some upsets.
bigkam writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:08 PM
Romney = Titanic
He's sinking fast. With all the publicity in the last few days for McCain, I expect to see him pull ahead of even Huck in some southern states. The more information that becomes available, the more I'm becoming convinced that McCain will lock this thing up on Tues.

The Polls
Anybody that looks at national polls at this time is very idiotic, they are meaningless. Romney would be the only republican right now that could have a chance of beating the democrats. McCain has absolutely no chance, 0. Can anyone tell me one, just one example of a President that won, having the very base of his party hating him? Has that ever happened? No it has not. Conservatives will ultimate vote for mcCain over Hillary or Obama. But where is McCain going to get donations from, where are his volunteers in every state going to comne from? It is the base of the party that usually donates and volunteers and is active in trying to get your nominee elected. McCain goes into the national election without this. It wont happen. The Clintons are a money raising machine, as Obama himself has shown to be. The only republican that has shown the ability to raise that kind of money is Romney. And he is the only that could write a check and actually outspend the Clintons. He might not win, but he is the only one that would have a chance.
Noxted writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:29 PM
McCain cannot beat
anyone in November. I am sad that the Conservative wing of the Republican party will not be represented. I shall not vote for McCain. Many of us will not. I don't like it, I don't want it to be that way, but we will have two liberal candidates running against each other in November. McCain will not win. Forget the polls, nobody has ever called me and asked my opinion. McCain will not have the needed support or votes to put a Republican back in office. How sad for Republicans.

I think the Romney family should pull in their own money and save it for where they will be allowed to do good with the world. They are a wonderful example of what is right with this country and they have done us all proud. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for the hope they have given so many of us.
This republican party is proving to be religiously bigoted and is shoving a recycled candidate on us that was an embarrassment for us all last night. The more power he gets, the more beligerent he is becoming! That smile he put on last night is scary! I actually used to support him!
Do you really believe, after last night, that the Clinton's are scared of this silly little man? That is the big blanket that is being pulled over the heads of the moderate republicans at this moment by the RNC and the DNC.

Wake up people!

Maybe if you Rombots had not lied
about Huckabee, he would be more sympathetic to your anguished pleas. McCain did not tell the lies.
eddie writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:44 PM
Rombots just cannot reason well.
For example, we already know many Rombots are pledging to oppose the Republican nominee if it is not Romney. Do you think that is why true Republicans are turning away from Romney? Do you think maybe they know that true Republicans do not vote for Socialists? Such an interesting strategy, we will be Republicans if you nominate our guy; otherwise, we support the Democrat. Interesting strategy, I really do not think Mitt will adopt that attitude. He wants a future in the Republican Party. If he only moves to action the weakest Republicans, he would be a poor (in the sense of not likely to stand a chance in the general)nominee for the Party. We, Republicans see who supports Romney. They are not Republicans. They are Rombots. The Party is unimportant
Trista writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:46 PM
Numbers
Let's say an endorsement for Romney came from Jim Dobson or Pat Robertson in the next couple of days. Huckabee's numbers could very well shift in Romney's favor. If you add Huckabee's numbers to Romney's, Romney wins by a landslide. Now is the time for those endorsements.

Dobson said he would never vote McCain. How far is he willing to go to defend his values? Maybe we should ask him.
eddie writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:51 PM
The Rombots should enter the real world.
Why doesn't Romney get out
of the race? He has no chance. He is ensuring the left wing of the Republican Party becomes dominant. If he cannot see that, he is not smart enough to win.

Huckabee cannot withdraw because he has been endorsed by Right-to-Life. It would be pretty rude to give up after receiving their endorsements. Also, Huckabee is the authentic conservative. He has been a social conservative his whole life. He can stand on his record.

Romney is the self-created conservative who is running away from his record. Rombots need to do more than say, "Listen to Romney, he says he has changed from his past. He no longer supports Planned Parenthood. He no longer seeks the radical homosexual agenda. He will stop passing gun control laws. How many of you have had the "Road to Damascus" conversion? It does not happen very often. I for one will wait for Romney to prove his social conservative "bona fides" by withdrawing and endorsing Huckabee. Until he does that, I will know that he does not care about the social conservative issues. Unless he is really too stupid to know that his past record does count until he establishes a social conservative record. He has not done so yet. The best step forward in establishing a social conservative record is to endorse Huckabee.

Like it or not Rombots. That is how it is.
bigkam writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:53 PM
Re: Trista
Because that Pat Robertson endorsement worked out so well for Rudy...

Wake up people, McCain will roll easily to this nomination. And he has done it despite all of the Rombots on radio and the internet preaching hatred against him. He took their worst punches, and he's still standing. It's time to start coming together so that we can win in November, not continue being hostile to each other. We all want the same thing, and that is another GOP president come next January.
eddie writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:54 PM
Rombots, your continued attacks on
Huckabee will not make you influential in the Huckabee camp. Of course, you have clearly demonstrated that you do not understand how people react when attacked and lied about. You think people should embrace those who attack and lie about them. Strange, strange world you come from.
eddie writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 1:57 PM
The Rombots are funny.
They are much like their candidate. Suggesting Huckabee just ignore the lies Romney spread about him and endorse Romney, are they even living in the real world. Romney's record demonstrates one thing, voters are correct to question his commitment to pro-life, pro-marriage, Second Amendment rights, and lower taxes. Those are the people who support Huck. Why would they take a chance on someone whose stands on the position remind you of a chameleon. You know the lizard that changes colors to blend in with his environment.
CincyGuy writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 2:02 PM
Miguel - You're Wrong
You wrote - "Romney would be the only Republican right now that could have a chance of beating the Democrats." Romney is getting his tail kicked up, down, left, right and center in the race for the nomination (he ain't gonna get it.) And all the head to head polls show him getting completely slaughtered by any of the Dem candidates. Have you been having daily lunches with Hugh Hewitt or something? Try again.
Trista writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 2:07 PM
So Huckabee Voters
would bolt for McCain should Huckabee drop out? Strange indeed, since no one has been more harsh to the evangelical base than McCain. What did he say about Pat Robertson, let me see, oh yeah, that's right, he called Pat Robertson an "agent of intolerance" and ticked off a huge base of evangelicals.

I stick to my guns, if Dobson made a Romney endorsement it would hold sway.

Romney is clearly more conservative than McCain and he obviously has more integrity than McCain who cheated on the love of his life and won't answer a direct question. I think many Christians are turned off by McCain's values.

Romney's record indicates that he votes pro life. If McCain decides to have an integrity relapse, however, heaven help the White House - it's Bill Clinton all over again but without the charm.

The head to head national polls are meaningless. Why dont you get that. Head to head polls told us in 1980 only George Bush could defeat Carter and Reagan would be easily defeated. They told us only Bob Dole had a chance againt Clinton.
National polls at this time only reveal name recognition. How many of the democrats saying to pollsters that they will vote for McCain are just Obama supporters that just dont want to admit at this point they would vote for Hillary. The idea that after 8 years of a Republican in the White House McCain is going to convince some democrats and some independants to vote republican is absurd, laughble. Then you add in the fact that McCain is hated by true conservatives and you have a recipe for a democratic landslide.
And you havent given an example of one presidential candidate hated by his base that went on to win the Presidency.
You havent told me where, where is McCain going to come up with the money to compete with the Clintons. If it wasn't for McCain-Feingold Campaign finance reform Mitt could actually help him out a little, but that is not going to happen. If you are angry at the thought of a Hillary presidency and you wanted to take out a TV add to tell others of your displeasure of her, you would be a criminal because McCain has criminalized free political speech. All in all we have with McCain a recipe for a disaster.

I think Romney should gather up his marbles and go home. I for one cannot see how he puts up with all this left wing/moderate Republican crap he has been taking on an almost daily basis.

Were it me, I'd give this sad situation the middle finger salute (which he in reality wouldn't do)tell the Republican Party to shove it (wich I will do the next time I get a phone call asking for donations)and spend my money on things that are truly meaningful.

In my view this business of Constitutional freedom of Religion, freedom of speech and other rights supposedly guaranteed is nothing short of a bunk, or at the vary least applies only to certain people

It is going to interesting to see the gnashing of teeth, the whining, the cursing and the potential destruction of the Republican Party, should this knot head McCain be elected.

I am pro life and I care very much about fighting abortion. Romney's wife has MS. He voted against allowing cloning for the purpose of stem cell research even though it could benefit her because he said,

“In considering the issue of embryo cloning and embryo farming, I saw where the harsh logic of abortion can lead—to the view of innocent new life as nothing more than research material or a commodity to be exploited.”

He changed from pro-choice to pro-life when the legislation started coming across his desk and he could not bear to think of the harm that he would cause millions of lives if he voted pro-choice. You may not believe his position, but

1. Reagan changed his views of abortion
2. Romney has painted himself into a corner as far as being a conservative. If he were elected and voted otherwise, he would be politically ruined.

the Republicans as a whole are not voting for MCain. Has McCain ever received more than 36% of the vote in a primary? McCain represents the left wing of the Party. The battle for the nomination is between the left wing, the center and the right wing. I do not believe McCain has the nomination locked up. I support Huckabee. I believe he can win the nomination before the convention. However, if he has not won before the convention, then I am hoping for a brokered convention. Huckabe is the authentic conservative candidate. Romney's record is not in any way that of a social conservative. What the Rombots do not understand is that there is no reason for a social conservative to take a chance on Romney when we have a proven social conservative to vote for.

The mainstream media is just trying to capitalize on McCain's win in Florida to oust Romney. Fact is, Romney is strong and the perceived threat to the establishment. Why do you think the establishment is coming out of the woodwork to "publicly" endorse McCain? 'Cause they like him? or because they know they can politick with a sellout?

Huckabee is second in the most recent polls in Oklahoma and had been leading until recently. I'm not happy with my choices, but I'm likely going to be voting for Huckabee on Tuesday as a vote to keep McCain from a majority of delegates going into the convention.

The times call for conservatives to engage in some tactical voting. Too bad Huckabee and Romney don't see the value of a tactical voting alliance to prevent McCain from sweeping Tsunami Tuesday with a bunch of 33% performances.

Eddie, I'll give it a try --
McCain/Kennedy -- McCain sponsored it, Romney would veto it.

McCain/Edwards -- McCain sponsored it, Romney would veto it.

McCain/Feingold -- McCain sponsored it, Romney would veto it.

McCain/Lieberman -- McCain sponsored it, Romney would veto it.

Bush Tax Cuts -- McCain would have vetoed them, Romney would have signed them.

Conservative Judges -- McCain won't appoint conservative judges like Alito who "wears his conservatism on his sleeve", Romney would.

Economy -- McCain hasn't a clue, Romney obviously understands it very well.

Working Men -- McCain married his wealth and has never had a non-government job and ridicules those who have with his "patriotism over profit" speeches and class warfare, Romney worked hard and smart for his money and brings a combination of success in both the private and public sectors.

Character -- McCain behaves like a Clinton, he ran out on his first wife when she got hurt and disfigured, Keating 5, tries to hide from the issues, won't answer questions, and his attacks on Romney are very personal and dishonest, Romney is a boyscout, has refused to attack McCain personally and he has remained focused on the issues.

McCain is an unrepentant liberal and Romney is running on a conservative platform.

McCain's current polling numbers are the byproduct of a liberal media that has acted as the right arm of his campaign. McCain's numbers will free-fall when the media turns on him -- And we all know the media will. Romney has already taken everything the media can dish out. There will be no ugly surprises.

McCain has no potential beyond "I am a POW hero" as a general election candidate. McCain is a Clinton impersonator that gives voters very little reason to vote for him.

Romney can contrast himself against any democrat candidate and give voters a substantive choice in positions and experience and at least talk about issues other than something that occured 40 years ago.
fatherinoklahoma writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 7:13 PM
There is no way Huckabee drops out
before Romney. His campaign is based on his evangelical identity, not on getting his message out. As such, he isn't tied to advertising like the other candidates.
Of perhaps more importance, his incentives to stay in the race are substantial. Huckabee is a liberal, with the notable exception of Right-to-Life issues, and his politics are much more in line with McCain's politics. Normally that would hurt McCain's voting block. But Huckabee is the paradox candidate -- the liberal candidate with the conservative following (thanks to the identity politics). And then there is the $$$$ and potential power. The longer Huckabee stays in the race, the more he will be worth on the talk circuit and the more likely he is to be rewarded by McCain.

In short, Huckabee isn't going anywhere.
fatherinoklahoma writes: Thursday, January, 31, 2008 7:19 PM
Sally, do you think there's a difference
between Huckabee and McCain? I don't think Romney endorses anyone in the primary elections if he drops out and probably gives a very generalized "I will support the party's eventual nominee, whoever that is" kind of statement.

But really, I don't think it would matter as I think Huckabee drops out the next day to preserve his relationship with McCain.

I think he's come to the same conclusion that the other candidates have, and that is do anything within reason to keep Romney from the nomination.

Alright, lets say that Romney is a "panderer and an opportunist." Why exactly is this detrimental to him? Politicians have always had these qualities and so isn't our recognition of it in him a sign of transparent honesty? Aside from that, it seems to me that he is our kind of opportunist, and many would argue that the only thing that matters is the advancement of conservative value. Now, would you rather have someone who may be opportunistic but will generally advance our beliefs or someone who DEFINITELY will not? I would choose the former, and so should Huckabee.

After Feb. 5th, I will not miss the whining and complaining and lying and name calling accompanied by Mitt's supporters. It seems to me that once Mitt is out of the race, the tone will become more positive. Has anyone wondered why all the other candidates do not like Mitt? The other 4 seem to get along just fine, but Mitt has had a fight with everyone except - Ron Paul. Although Ron was right to inform Mitt we are electing a commander in chief not an economist (a constiutional fact/requirement Mittheads forget when saying Mitt does not have any foreign policy or defense or military experience but he would be a great commander in chief - huh?). This list is longer than any list you can attribute to McCain's liberal issues, YET Mittheads won't acknowledge it and they want americans to use Mitt's experience as governor to vote for him, without looking at the decisions he made as governor. What world do you people live in? Dillusional, Dishonest, Desperate. Now stop insulting other conservative republicans who do not want to nominate Mitt. McCain supporters have not asked any Mitt supporters to vote for another candidate just to win, but we have made a case for McCain Commander in Chief (the job we are looking to hire for) and said why Mitt is not qualified to be commander in chief. McCain will end up as the Republican nominee, but he will lose in November. Over the next 4 years the Republicans will suffer so much that they will beg Romney to run in '12. History repeats itself and this is 1976 all over again when the McCain wing of the party (represented by Gerald Ford) won the nomination over Ronald Reagan. Four years later Reagan beat an inept president to start the revolution. I'll do just like I did in '76--vote for the candidate whose last name starts with an "R," even though he will lose. Government Spending - Who inherited a deficit, ran a balanced state budget, improved infrastructure, and left a surplus?
Huckabee!

Taxation - who supports the FairTax and has identified interim measures to get it implemented?
Huckabee!

Foreign Relations - who will foreign leaders work with?
Huckabee!

This whole CEO/ War Hero schtick is so far from true qualification to be president, it's silly.

Romney should quit and endorse Huckabee - it's the GOP's best hope in November.

Sarah, the polls and the numbers
just don't support your view of Romney supporters . . . there just plain aren't enough mormons and money people for your contention to be considered at all serious. Romney is winning the conservative vote. but yes, it no doubt includes the mormons, of which there aren't very many this country.

Oh quit parroting these guys
When are you guys going to understand that Huckabee is not splitting the vote with Romney? The Fredheads are already supporting Romney, so quit confusing the two. The social conservatives who support Huckabee simply don't trust Romney, otherwise don't you think they'd support him already? When it comes to Romney there is just no indecision. He is an appalling identity candidate, and we won't forget how he and his supporters crossed the line in December and the early primaries. You reap what you sew.

McCain on the other hand is tolerable and trustworthy on certain key issues (life, Iraq, judges). He is a much better alternative than Romney or Paul should Huckabee lose the nomination.

A Vote for Whom is a vote for whom?
A vote for Huckabee is a vote for Romney?

You know, like, eating an ice cream cone is really eating a peanut butter sandwich.

It wrongly assumes that most Huckabee supporters will go to Romney - not gonna happen. They would rather go with the moderate they know, then the liberal they know.

Romney leads in 0 states. He is behind Huckabee in delegates. He should leave with some dignity and offer a real alternative to McCain. But even if he doesn't, he might just get creamed by the Huck on Super Tuesday!

Huckabee: He Took a Muckin' and Kept on Huckin.

This is so ironic
Many of the people that are supporting McCain are putting so-called "electability" before principal. The big joke is going to be on you guys, McCain, and the establishment Republicans sychophants who are tripping over themselves to endorse McCain in hopes of political favors. Many, many conservatives WILL NOT vote for McCain. I grant you that some will hold their nose and do it because they don't want Hillary to win. However, many (including myself) will either vote for some third-party candidate, not vote at all, or even vote for Hillary. McCan has thumbed his nose at conservatives one time to many ad he continues to do so. McCain will lose a lot of conservative votes and will not win the election because of it. If he thinks he can make it up with cross-over Dems and Independents, let him try. (the Dems will never vote for a Republican after 8 years of GWB). It won't be enough to make up for the lack of conservative vote.

So, the "electability" of Mr. Straight Talk is a big myth.

Huh?
Sa5comm wrote, "When it comes to Romney there is just no indecision. He is an appalling identity candidate, ..."

Are you kidding me? Huckabee is the only identity candiate in the GOP race. He has one liberal stance after another (e.g., a federal smoking ban, tuition for illegals, etc.), and the only reason he has won over some conservatives is that he's been able to convince the evangelicals to vote for him.

Satcomm wrote, "McCain on the other hand is tolerable and trustworthy on certain key issues (life, Iraq, judges)."

How on earth could I trust someone who has given conservatives the finger time and time again while cozying up to Dems? McCain is arrogant and elitist--and we're still in the primaries for goodness sakes! He'll start acting like a king if he gets the White House. I'll NEVER vote for McCain, and I know many others who feel the same.
