I don't know how wise a strategy it is for Democrats to be on the attack against a working class man from Ohio.

The reason that Joe the Plumber got inserted into the Presidential race was not because of anything John McCain did. It was because Barack Obama gave Joe a snarky, communist, answer to a legit question.

Joe the Plumber is a guy who is wanting to BUY the company he's been a slave to these many years. So the guy has put some money away and is sacrificing to do it. Because he will be the business owner he may in fact GROSS over $250,000. But here's the problem - he has to meet payroll. Simply cutting the gross in half and now you're way UNDER $250,000 per year. What about overhead, supplies, storage, tools, legal services, accounting.

But under Obama's plan here's what "Senator Government" would LIKE to do:

Joe the Plumber gets called to a job site, standard thing - kitchen sink fix, final bill comes to $100. But now Joe will have to turn around and give between $40-$45 of it away to Sen. Government.

NOW GUESS WHAT HAPPENS.

In order to still clear his operating cost Joe the Plumber now has to raise his rates to still clear the needed $100. So the price on the job just jumped to $180 - nearly double.

But WHY? Joe the Plumber's not making a CENT more on the job but the person who needed to hire him just had to fork over almost twice as much money?

So that Barack Obama can "spread the wealth" around.

So what do the Democrats do on the morning after they wake up and realize they've just spit in the eye of Joe the Plumber, and are now going to make me pay almost TWICE as much for the services I need to live?

ATTACK US?

Like I said, I'm not so sure this is a good strategy...

correction
Businesses are taxed on their net, not gross income. Payroll, supplies, and depreciation on equipment will all be deducted before the tax man gets to take a bite of the income.

I'm not in favor of taxing these people more, and the basic premise that tax hikes will increase prices is absolutely right. Obama made the point last night that few (2-5%) small businesses make $250k in profit. That may be true, but a lot of the owners have investments in multiple businesses - which brings them over the $250K level. McCain made his point well; Why do you want to tax anybody more at a time like this?

Are you threatening Joe Biden, Reed? It sure sounds like it in typical Palinian fashion.

By the way, Clarence Thomas was THE most unqualified justice that Bush I could've picked at the time. He was wholly and ridiculously under qualified, in fact. The only reason one can glean that he was chosen was after failure on the scale of Harriet Miers, Bush I had pressure to bring in someone to give the illusion of fairness to his party. He chose a doof of color who just happened to be a clone of that borish anti-choice ideologue, Scalia.

Thomas was accused of sexual misconduct with female subordinates in his office, which led to the hearings of Anita Hill's testimony. Even with all that evidence of skeeviness added to the lowest common denominator but anti-Roe v. Wade factor, the man was STILL put in on the Supreme Court. Regardless his race, Thomas was the single most disastrously ignorant pick out there. Yeah, be proud of that Palinista hate mob.

A lot of Hot Air
Joe Biden sure know lots of people. All the employees at the closed Katie's Restaurant, the Home Depot, all the plumbers, firemen, and police officers, and none of his friends make over $250,000 a year You need to get out more and rub shoulders with the wealthy. Then, maybe, you would know how WE feel about your Robin Hood approach to giving OUR money away. That is what charities are for, Joe.

We DO NOT NEED OR WANT YOURS OR BARACK OBAMA'S HELP HERE.

P.S. I think you just insulted Joe Six Pack and all the plumbers too!

Uncle Thom-as
Of course Clarence Thomas' only qualification was his obvious promise to never open his mouth and rubber-stamp every decision Scalia writes.

The ultra right wing Supreme Court is really the ultimate triumph of both Bush administrations.

What a sob story
Sure there are people who don't have jobs or healthcare, but to hell with them! We have a real human tragedy here, this "working class" guy can't afford to buy the company he works for! Doesn't your heart just break? Being able to buy the company you work for is a basic human right, is it not?

This guy is about as much a working stiff as he is an undecided voter; if you listen to the PRESS CONFERENCE he did, you'll hear him spouting Republican rhetoric on everything from taxes to the war in Iraq. Maybe he could take a cue from Obama and not comment on things that are above his pay grade!

And incidentally, speaking of that little phrase, it's funny how so many of you who think of Obama as such an elitist got bent out of shape that he was humble and didn't pretend to have definitive answers to philosophical questions... True elitists are the ones who claim to have knowledge of these things and moral superiority.

Not Even Affected
He said that he’s getting ready to buy a company that makes $250,000 to $280,000 per year. Assume that’s the company’s net income.

Using the higher figure, if he organizes the business as a sole proprietorship, then he’ll deduct half the social security tax $7,800 resulting in adjusted gross income of $272,200. Less the standard deduction $7,850 (if he has a mortgage and itemizes, then it would be more). Less personal exemptions $8,000 estimated. Taxable income would be $256,350.

So his actual taxable income over $250,000 would be $6,350. Obama’s tax plan would have a tax increase of 3% in that tax bracket, everything under $250,000 would remain at the same tax rates.

So Obama’s tax plan will cost Joe the Plumber $190.

He’s eligible for the “Making Work Pay” tax credit of $500. If he has a mortgage then he would receive Obama’s 10% mortgage interest credit. If he provides health insurance for his employees, then he’d receive Obama’s Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. All in all, Joe the Plumber would make out pretty good under Obama's plan.

95% illusion
You've said it so well. Obama beating up on the small business guys. We get it already.

Note to Dave,

I think you better take a look at the Wall Street Journal article on Obama's tax plan. They were not too keen.

Do you understand taxes?
Kevin, you DO understand that you ONLY pay taxes on PROFITS ... right? And a business can deduct just about ANYTHING (from paperclips to a moral boosting lunch for your employees) Your whole post is nonsense ...
