"Preggers Reality Show?"

NEW YORK (AP) - Nickelodeon is considering a special for its young audience about sex and love following the news that 16-year-old "Zoey 101" star Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant.

The television network has made no announcement about the future of "Zoey 101," its popular program aimed primarily at youngsters aged 9- 14. Filming for the show's fourth and final season has finished, and episodes are scheduled to begin airing in February.

For the special, Nickelodeon said it's talking with Linda Ellerbee, the veteran newswoman who has stepped in frequently in the past with shows on talking to children about difficult issues in the news. She's done shows about same-sex parents, AIDS, the Columbine shooting and President Clinton's impeachment scandal.

"I think it's important that something be done," Ellerbee told The Associated Press on Thursday. "But I think it's important that it be done in a measured way, and not just to feed the beast of news stories.

A Nickelodeon spokesman, Dan Martinsen, confirmed the discussions but said no decision had been made.

Special or series--featuring pregnant JL
J.L. Spears (or any other pregnant teenager) is a TERRIBLE idea, IMO.

UNLESS, and ONLY IF, she has made the wise decision of an ADOPTION plan for the baby--to give the child the best chance for a healthy normal life. That best chance includes a Mother and a Father who are MARRIED to each other, as well as having the maturity, education and all other necessary qualities of being prepared, as well as loving parents.

The "adoption plan" choice for pregnant teens needs to be much better publicized. A well-done series about that process--showing how the birth mom is involved selecting the adoptive parents for her baby--would be helpful in educating far too many who still use the term "give-up" the baby when talking about such a choice.

Such a series could also explain some of the types of "open adoption" (with birth moms getting photos, letters, etc.) available in various states.

IMO, though, Linda Ellerbee would be an awful choice for the type of series I have described. It would need to be done by licensed and experienced adoption workers and youth mental health clinicians who don't have a predisposition favorable to same-sex parenting.

Nickelodeon, or any network *rewarding*
a pregnant teenager with further fame, would be just contributing to the ever hastening slide of our society into the sewers of history. (I know I'm mixing metaphors, but "dustbins" didn't express my meaning. Think Sodom & Gomorah, ancient Pompeii, Rome, Sparta, etc.)

Teen pregnancies used to cause "scandal" or "bad reputation"--ah, for the good old days! Now, premarital sexual activity is too accepted, even expected and promoted by some parents and educators.

And nearly 40% of the births in this nation are to unwed young women or girls. APPALLING, as well as an ever increasing problem for our society to try to 'make up the difference' to these children deprived of a MARRIED Mother & Father. "Making up that difference' is an IMPOSSIBLE task.

This bottomless supply of inadequately parented children is the source of all too many of our nation's problems such as violence, poverty, substance abuse, physical and emotional abuse, neglect, etc. etc.

Not giving up -- giving more.
Excellent post, Tricia.

Don't Do It Please
Don't give more television time to teenage pregnancies. This will normalize the behavior and since Spears is influential with young girls, they will think its cool or normal to be pregnant as a teen, out of wedlock. A bad idea, being executed very badly. Don't do it please! Does anyone know where people can call to ask them not to do this?
