"not gone yet?"

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what both sides of the partisan aisle would prefer Governor Spitzer to do - LEAVE. The editorial pages in all the NY papers agree today.

I mean for crying out loud - if the complaints are true - the most recent incident occurred about a month ago. And he once busted two different prostitution rings.

I wrote yesterday that the delay in making a statement to the public was likely due to his trying to configure a way to hold on to office. The more time goes by the more likely he will believe his chances to be able to remain.

This after his drivers' license initiative for illegals raised the collective ire of the voters of his state leaves him with little if any political capital.

Well today the State Senate is sending the message that his ride will be a bumpy one should he not decide to do the right thing. They have given him 36 hours to resign or face impeachment.

Unlike recent Washington congressional members who HAVE survived similar scandals, I do not believe Spitzer will be able to raise the public support necessary to hold on to power.

But we'll see... the clock is ticking.

Clintons Encouraging Spitzer to Hold On?
Kevin,

I believe the Clintons are encouraging Spitzer to stick around, despite the fact that he's already drafted his resignation letter. Spitzer is a superdelegate who is solidly in their camp, and they'll need him at convention to steal the Dem nomination. If he resigns, he'd be replaced by Lt. Gov. Paterson, an African American.

Is Paterson among the growing number of black politicians who are upset with the Clintons over their use of the race card against her chief rival, Sen. Obama? If so, would he snub Clinton, a Senator from his own state, and vote as a superdelegate for Obama? Pledged delegates can't get either of them to the nomination, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Bill mobilized to Albany to keep Spitzer in office.

After all, nobody knows how to weasel out of a sex scandal and skirt impeachment (pun intended) like Bill Clinton!
