"Maverick no more..." I've said this in MANY interviews recently, "One can not be the 'standard bearer' for conservative values the 'maverick' of the mainstream media simultaneously." Thusly the MSM proves me right... AGAIN! The Washington Post, "He's bad on the war and health care." The L.A. Times, "He's FOR TORTURE!" Time Magazine, "He's a complete fake!" And New Yorker magazine: has to hand off the tough question to his staff... On a side note - a good friend of mine unearthed what I think might be the ultimate McCain argument in his upcoming debates against Obama. (Assuming that McCain keeps his frame of mind well enough to not become reflexive or knee jerk against Obama, which I personally believe will be his toughest temptation to overcome.) But in the debates this is the card he should play over and over again: "You know, in all the years I've been working across the aisle, Mr. Obama has just never been there. He's a nice man, with a beautiful family, but where has he been. I was the one working across the aisle, working with Democrats to solve the problems we face - even to the ire of many of my own supporters. But Mr. Obama was never one of the ones leading the way to solve those problems. I've worked with many Democrats, but Mr. Obama was never one of them. Where was he?" At first blush I thought this tactic was quite bland - but the more I contemplated it - I think my friend is on to something. It DOES reveal Obama's thin experience while positioning McCain's position as one who has ALWAYS walked across partisan lines to get things done. (Something most of us conservatives can recite chapter and verse...) And that may be in attribute that the independents will be looking for in the general election... Certainly an idea worth trying...

the entire conservative movement turned on him in the past 6 months. |

rocket scientist to KNOW this would happen. Poor McCain...he deserves everything he's gonna get. |

You have to be far to the right to be considered a true conservative so I would never want a Limbaugh, a Hannity, & others on the far right to run for office. They are just as nutty as the far left. |

Perhaps the author should have read the Time article, rather than taking something entirely out of context to make a point - which the article could not have made. Tongue in cheek aside, after all, the article recognized the fact that McCain appeals to many independents and not a few democrats, whereas Hillary will recieve no GOP cross-overs at all. |

Too bad the country has to suffer because the Republicans are getting stuck with old-man McCain. I never believed the often professed conclusion in some past elections that "the fix was in," but it certainly appears to be true this time. It was touted that McCain's campaign was all but dead a few short months ago, because he was unpopular among conservatives and did not have enough money to out campaign his opponents, Romney in particular. Suddenly, he becomes the presumptive nominee and called himself the "come back kid," and yet half the party hates him! How does that happen unless the fix is in? It is obvious he is another Dole who is going to help Obama get elected! The "conservative movement" did not turn against McCain, McCain turned against the conservative movement. But it matters not who turned against whom, McCain is getting what he wanted, and now he is going to get what's coming to him, compliments of the MSM, which carefully protected him until he safely achieved his goal (and theirs, too) by making sure he was never cast as the flip-flopping liberal he truly is. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Sadly, the entire country is going to suffer as a result. |

Surely no one is surprised.Yhe ONLY reason he was so popular when he was a "straight-talker"was that he hated Pres.Bush.He has had his last favorable press. We ALL knew it would happen. |

Maybe the Ancient Mariner's eyesight has gotten so poor that he can't see who's around and who's not. |
