I've just returned from a great evening. The Lovely Bride and I were invited to the Manhattan Institute's annual Alexander Hamilton Dinner.

This year's theme was not lost on me for it's timeliness nor its importance.

NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly was honored with the Alexander Hamilton Award. And for good reason. In the city that Hamilton loved above all others Kelly has been responsible for a 23% drop in crime over a single year, a 38% drop since 2001, and a 77% drop since 1993.

Kelly is on his second tour as Commissioner.

He also has fewer members on his force than a year ago because of budget cuts, and due to the desire to trim government as opposed to raising taxes Mayor Bloomberg (who introduced Kelly tonight) told those in attendance that Kelly had done more with less.

I also learned that while San Francisco has a homeless person who refuses care on the street for every 200 residents of its borders, New York has only one homeless person per every 4000 residents. An immense accomplishment for Kelly, Bloomberg, and the whole of NYC.

But the treat of the evening was to hear from Dr. Henry Kissinger on the state of tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as well as North Korea.

Dr. Kissinger was his usually bubbly self, uncharacteristically beginning his time with a deadpan series of humorous stories that would've had Letterman green with envy.

He also made two very important points.

He kept apologizing to the "right wing friends" who disagreed with him on his position that negotiation is always a good plan.

He didn't need to.

As he explained the current crisis with Iran and North Korea his position was simply that in negotiation with them we would learn things about them as a nation.

I think this has some merit to it. It's not impossible but it is certainly much more difficult for a nation to be overtly operating against public actions towards resolution.

His second point was that in negotiation it is established and is easy for the world to point to, what the debate is and how the issue is framed.

Basically allowing one's opponent to hang themselves, at least for nation's who harbor ill intent is exactly what the Dr. calls for.

He also made it clear, that negotiation or not Iran and North Korea must BOTH be denied the chance to develop a nuclear weapon of any type.

Not exactly a "peace through strength" message, but also certainly far from an Obamian philosophy of cut and run.

Reasonable, well explained, and very engaging--that was my night with Hank!

And being set at Cipriani's, with delightful company, it will not be one I soon forget...

This clown has been a disaster and it is only due to ignorance of what he is about that people pay attention to him. He should be treated with contempt.

I suggest you come up with a more trusted source if you want people to believe that quote.

"with Iran and North Korea his position was simply that in negotiation with them we would learn things about them as a nation."

While I believe that Kissinger has a point here do you not believe that we already know enough about the nation of Iran, with particular focus on the leadership. The repeated bellicose statements about the destruction of Israel make any further knowledge about them somewhat irrelevant at this point and give the world plenty to point at right now. It would seem the Iranians have had all the rope they need to hang themselves but no progress is being made.

Or, do you think he is saying that by more public negotiation the people of Iran will be the ones who learn more and ultimately turn on their own leadership and resolve the problem.

If the latter I'm with Ledeen - Faster, Please.

Big deal. So was David Rockefeller and Larry Frankin.

“Military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy.” - Henry Kissinger, quoted in "Kiss the Boys Goodbye: How the United States Betrayed Its Own POW’s in Vietnam," by Monika Jenson-Stevenson & William Stevenson, McClelland & Stewart Ltd., 1999

I believe he said this as it fits his loathsomeness. Kissinger has shown himself to be untrustworthy. Do you remember the Bryant ball bearing machines and who approved the sales? I do.
