Here He Is: Fairfax High School's Prom Queen, Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia, an eighteen year old male senior at a Los Angeles high school, decided that he wanted to run for prom QUEEN.

"I will be wearing a suit, but don't be fooled," Garcia said. "Deep down inside, I am a queen!"

Garcia, who is openly gay, ran for the title of prom queen, beating out several female classmates. His professionalism in running his campaign surprised his fellow students, making them believe that this was not just a joke or a political statement.

“It just shows how open-minded our class is,” said Vanessa Lo, 18, the school’s senior class president.

"Open minded" isn't exactly the term I would want to define my graduating class. What does "open minded" even mean? Based on the term it seems like it would imply that one is open to ideas. But what Vanessa Lo seems to insinuate is that open minds are moldable minds that support whatever recent fad or politically correct statement opinion is most popular. Open mindedness should not be coupled with neutrality! One must decide what they believe, develop opinions, and make decisions based on that.

And in this specific case, having a man as queen (regardless of the many moral implications) twists the basic cultural definition of "queen" that has been around for millennia and shouldn't be thrown out the window because one man decides he wants a sparkly tiara. This may cause a nationwide evaluation of prom court rules and perhaps a redefinition of who can can run for which title.

I’m not really happy about that. He should’ve run for prom king,” said 17-year-old senior Juan Espinoza.

"Espinoza said he has nothing against Garcia but believes many students voted as a joke so they could see the prom king dancing with another guy on prom night."

Many moral implications?
Uhh... Name one?

Why
This is exactly why the gay marriage/gay rights issue will be won ultimately because of age and not race/faith/politics.

Young people have no trouble with this whatsoever.

Shhhhh.... don't tell KMC or the other haters. They really think this issue is their ticket back into power after they f**ked up the economy, the war, Katrina and just about everything else.

Its true Elizabeth...
People in my generation consider sexual identity as petty as what color you dye your hair or what brand of jeans you buy. Its a generation doesn't consider any long term ramifications to lifestyle decisions.

And twomay...just check out Romans 1:24 if you are looking for moral implications...

That was funny. It's funny because it's true.

"Its a generation doesn't consider any long term ramifications to lifestyle decisions."

I'm going to correct that for you. It's a generation that doesn't consider sexual orientation to be a 'decision.' But thanks for playing.

And yeah, age is what's going to win the gay debate. Fifty years hence, social conservatives are going to look as dumb on this issue as they have on every other. Rock & roll is corrupting the youth. Women don't need suffrage. The latest Parisian fashions are displaying far too much ankle. Hey, that dude over there's actually the son of God. All that crap.

That's quite wrong. Many young people today change around their sexuality like they do their hair color.

Sex is trivial to many of them, true, but they KNOW it's a matter of choice. I guess they figure it's best to be as the moment warrants.

Sorry: you're not going to find many
dyed in the wool homosexuals in today's youth. You're just going to find a lot of kids piddling around with whatever. Doesn't matter to them, as long as they fit in and find their comfort.

Actually, you may find some blow-back from kids in coming years. They've done it all, and are bored.

We've made sex nothing more than a game of marbles to them. They don't see it as some big civil-rights issue.

You're living in the past, when sex had weight and power. It doesn't any longer, except to people hold on to those dusty old ideals of faith, marriage, man and woman.

There might come a day( I think it's happening already, actually) when young people curse your view of easy sex, free-for-the-taking. They may very well morph into puritans of the first order. HA..wouldn't that be ironic?

Besides, people like you rarely have many children. People of faith and values tend to have a lot. Who's gonna be running the ship in a few years? The Dugger children or Barry's girls? :P

I think that Dr. Adams at the U of GA would have had a feild day with him...

Hmmm..Just a Thought
I keep getting told that one is born homosexual. Isn't it curious then that there are so many born in Cawleefornia? And those born in Cawleefornia, they seem to be clustered around Hollywood and San Francisco?

Looney was telling me the other day about his hair dresser, his manicurist, his pedicurist, (not that there's anything wrong with that) etc. Could there possibly be some connection between the environment you're surrounded with rather than a gene you're born with?

After all, I know of no man here in my area who goes to a pedicurist and/or manicurist (not that there's anything wrong with that), and I have to be honest, I don't know that I've met a homosexual man. I'm sure that I have but just haven't known it, but certainly they're not in the numbers that we see in certain parts of Cawleefornia.

hmmmm. Interesting.

Fascinating
It's fascinating that people like "Good Man's Wife" can read Elizabeth's cool, impersonal statment of documented fact and twist it into a highly charged, personal attack.

The matter of gay/lesbian rights will be thoroughly squashed by the Generation Xers.

None of this is worthy of "Good Man's Wife"s need to attack the messenger.
