SURPRISE?

Some will argue that I never had anything to be concerned about, but given what his record has been when it comes to this political/faith intersection, I was more than pessimistic about the quality of what was going to happen with the candidates last night.

Moreover Warren's previously unrepentant "fan-ness" of Obama going so far as to serve as a private adviser of Obama - I questioned whether the goals of the forum were going to be met.

At the end of the night... I have to admit - I was not just surprised, I was shocked.

Warren's line of questioning was surprisingly consistent and precise to both candidates. Tuning in initially during Obama's portion I was peeved that Warren did not press on the follow ups - but at the conclusion of McCain's time slot I felt nothing but agreement with Charles Krauthammer on FNC - it was the finest forum of the election thus far.

Rick Warren has given America significant reasons to be concerned about his involvement in the political debate. Not critiquing Obama's gospel of condoms at his AIDS conference two years ago still standing out as the most predominant example.

But that being said - Warren corrected a good deal of that perception last night. And interestingly enough - after promising a grilling over "non-asked questions" about poverty, AIDS, etc. He actually really did ask about the most important issues to evangelicals - the definition of life, the definition of marriage, religious freedom/liberty, and of course biggies like taxes and national security.

For my pre-forum pessimism Pastor Warren, please accept this cynic's sincere apology...

More on my assessment of Mr. Obama's underwhelming performance tomorrow in my syndicated column.

The star.
The star of the evening was Rick Warren. Obama was far too intellectual for the average American and McCain just recited well prepared talking points.

I think you mean...
Obama stammered and stuttered and could barely put two thoughts together... Most of which were intellectually dishonest...

Goat - I told you the forum wasn't on Nick at Nite...

Interesting take Kevin
I was less into Rick Warren's style, not because his questions were bad, but there was little opportunity for follow up (and Rick did not seem to want to anyway).

As for the candidates--Obama was great on style but weak on some of his answers. For example, Obama is pro choice. The crowd disagrees with that position. Don't give a pat condescending answer like "It's above my payscale..." Would you say that on a job interview? Not if you wanted to get the job. That lie, that life does not start at conception, is what many pro life folks tell each other to emotionally justify infantcide.

Far too intellectual?
Pet Goat, you had me on the floor with that one. Best joke I have heard in a month.

Calling a floundering, stutterer that can't manage to express a complete thought or opinion and "intellectual". Ha! That's just too funny. You could start a world class stand up routine with that!

What is even better is the subtlety of saying that vague, uniformed rhetoric equates to intelligence. Man, it get's funnier the more you think about it!

You're really on to something with this, I must say. This could send stupid people on a scavenger hunt of actually searching for intellectual meaning in empty, rhetorical propaganda! That would be a classic to watch. Maybe a reality show where a house full of Dr. Phil fans try to figure out what Obama is saying.

... wait... you weren't actually trying to be serious, were you?

surprised
me and my husband. I didn't watch Obama, didn't think my b.p. could stand it and I didn't want the top of my head to blow off. I just can't stand looking or listening to this creep, I don't see where anyone says he's a great orator.
He READS fairly well, but that's not oratory.

I thought McCain did quite well. I'm not with him 100% although I saw things that I liked when I read his book, and almost voted for him in 2000. If I decide to vote for POTUS, it won't be for him as much as it will be against Obama.
Obama lacks a core, if he were a true Christian he'd have and know he has a core.

Obama's craptacular answer!
When asked "At what point does a baby get human rights, in your view?," McCain answered "At the moment of conception." Obama's answer here was flaming-dirigible bad:

Whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is, you know, above my pay grade...

But what bowls me over about how craptacular his answer here is, did no one on his campaign ever anticipate that he would have to talk about abortion, such that he could come up with a better answer than this? Surely they would have had to expect it at this forum in particular.

N'Obama
Trying to court a segment of America that traditionally has not supported your side basically ends up looking like the guy who likes this really pretty girl, but at the same time knows that if he let that girl know the truth about himself, she’d have nothing to do with him. Conservative Christian votes are looking really pretty to Obama right now, otherwise he never would have agreed to this. But let it be known that the awkwardness and deception is too obvious for him to get the girl.

Irrelevant
This posting and KMC's article are irrelevant.

It's the economy, stupid!

This was a milestone in politics
For sometime I have been waiting for a forum that takes away the ability to humiliate and ridicule the opponent. Instead this forced the candidates to speak to their philosophies and policies. All though I believe there was pandering to an evangelical crowd. Most notably with Obama's tip towing through the moral issues while trying not to betray his ultra liberal base.
