Bryan Preston, whose fine work can be read regularly at HOT AIR has weighed in on the latest round of bizarre statements by Rick Warren. I originally mentioned the Warren's CNN appearance yesterday.

Bryan's concern about Rick's issues with Obama don't register as highly as they do with me. What bugs him worse is the very evident contradiction that Warren puts himself under when it comes to "back channel for peace", "I'm not a diplomat", "I'll go wherever I'm not muzzled", statements and his willingness to shake the hands of monsters in Syria and North Korea.

The part of Bryan's post that I find MOST interesting however is how he responds to the e-mail he has received telling him to keep his nose out of Warren's business. These e-mailers somehow equating Bryan's posting on the matter as some sort of equivalency to "airing Saddleback Church's dirty laundry." Bryan's response is a simple and logical one. If Rick Warren will stay out of the political arena - what Bryan writes about - then Bryan will stop writing about him. If Warren does what he says (staying out of politics) then he should have nothing to fear from bloggers who do cover politics.

These same e-mail missives have been arriving in my box lately and I find it ridiculous that I began to answer their criticisms - especially when Warren himself sends out e-mail blasts to "announce" or "respond" or to communicate in some way with the public.

Read the whole thing.

A Christian view from afar
I don't know Rick Warren and I have no dog in your fight with him, but I think maybe you and Bryan Preston need a cup of cold water in the face.

The purpose of a Christian missionary is to spread the gospel. In fact, all Christians are to fulfill the Great Commission. Thus, Rick Warren is perfectly right to say that spreading the gospel to Syria and North Korea is a good thing, a righteous thing, a God-honored and -directed thing.

Now, you object to the politics involved, all incensed that he "shakes hands with monsters." Okay, well, the Apostle Paul apparently made friends with those from the household of Caesar. Sometimes Christians have to get up close and personal with some might icky people in order to spread the gospel.

Now, let's just fantasize for a moment. What if one of these "monsters" (and I don't argue that they are monsters, because their nature is self-evident) were to actually listen to Rick Warren or even the guy who carries Warren's golf clubs and accept the Lord as personal Savior? Whoa, major heart change there! Not likely to happen, but we're dreaming so why not dream all the way.

The Apostle Paul was headed to Damascus to arrest Christians so that they might presumably be killed for their beliefs. There was a bright light and a voice from heaven and -- a major heart change! Paul went from trying to kill Christians to trying to make Christians. Ananias was unsure of what the Lord thought he could accomplish by talking with this Christian killer. He did it anyway. Barnabas was told by the apostles -- not yet, he's too scary, but he stayed friends. Now think about that heart change. Think about what would happen if one of these horrible men experienced that heart change.

Is that politics? It gets close. Is that religion? You betcha! Is that a back channel to peace? Could be.

Good article

I just cannot believe people fall for that stuff.

There are some good comments over there, too:

"This guys so full of crap cats keep trying to bury him. " Ha.

And another from a guy who wants to keep political ads off TV, make everyone actually read to get information.
