I guess it's good to have a glorious afternoon - when your campaign began the day on this note.
I'm in my office 11a - ish this morning. I get an e-mail from the McCain camp touting three different stories in the MSM today that try to make the claim that the American people are actually closer to being fall down, drop dead in love with the new AMNESTY legislation than being against it.
In fact here's the language used in the e-mail this morning:
Good morning. I am well aware that most right-of-center bloggers oppose the Senate immigration reform compromise plan.
Nevertheless, I am compelled to share the below coverage on the measure, including the new NYT/CBS poll that shows that substantial majorities across the political spectrum support the provisions in the bill.
Greenville News (SC): Ignoring Illegal Immigration Is Not An Option
Washington Post: Letting Fear Rule
New York Times: Immigration Bill Provisions Gain Wide Support In Poll
Let me know if you have any questions and have a great holiday weekend.
The Greenville piece was utter nonsense - a mere editorial praising Sen. Graham's involvement in the issue. For the record - let's just say that Senator Lindsay Graham could not physically be any more IN Senator McCain's "pocket" if he tried.
The WaPo column was merely another editorial from one person screaming "nativism will kill the GOP."
And that left the NYTimes "story" of a "poll" taken recently that "found" that the "majority" of Americans agree with the "provisions" "included" in the Immigration bill presently before Congress.
The reason for all the "quotes" is because each of them are holes big enough to drive a convoy of semis through. One of the more humorous examples was how the question pertaining to the "renewable visa" is presented in the actual phone polling. It never makes mention that there is no obligation (on an endlessly renewable until death of the recipient) for the visa holder to ever become a citizen. Thus we could effectively import an entire sub-culture who had no loyalties to this nation.
My biggest beef with the McCain morning blunder is the arrogance with which it perceives it is right on the issue. Illegals are a national security problem. You do not fix that problem with "get to stay forever for free" Z Visas. You fix the problem 1.) by turning off the flow - where the leak is occurring (FIRST) and THEN (2) you address the issue of those who are here now.
McCain has a tin ear to border security. And it is his denseness to the voice of the American people on this matter that causes such a disaffection. And telling us that we should change our minds because supposedly we must believe polls that tells we already believe something else - WILL NOT HELP!
